WILL we know?
This is what is horrifying to think about.
If anything happens to a child they will bury it deep, and with the lack of accurate record keeping that has been suggested, who will figure it out.
It makes me sick to think about it.

(4,509 posts)It doesn't take a baby long to die of dehydration. And 12 year olds should not be in charge of their care.

This has really been on my mind because of the tents in Texas. It doesn't take much for a kid to get dehydrated. Kids get hospitalized for this, for God's sake.
Even if there's plenty of water available (will it be rationed like food?), who's going to make sure that the kids drink it?
Will the staff even be trained on the warning signs?
ETA:. totally agree with Runningdawg above.

The tired old history fan in me is pretty sure that since April, there have already been deaths among the separated children, especially among the younger ones - the infants and toddlers - who had already gone through a long and stressful journey and were in bad shape, physically or mentally, to begin with.
Poor nutrition, sanitation, and the exposure to foreign diseases, especially since they've been travelling for months across different environments - and in the mid-spring when everything is "blooming" (specifically bacteria and fungi) can cause catastrophic physical failure.
Babies and toddlers without their parents or a trusted caretaker in such a situation can easily just shut down. And that is usually fatal.

(18,968 posts)They already are.
They are going to put children as young a 1 into tents in the desert surrounded by barbed wire fences, temps will bu in the triple digits, children are going to get sick and die.
Trump called them vermin, he doesn't care if they all die.

(25,106 posts)Separating families is emotionally traumatic and if they can be quickly reunited with their parents this issue would not be so alarming. (For instance if the kids were staying a few miles away and case workers were in constant touch with both the parents and the kids on a daily basis)
But this is not the case.
There is no accountability.
