And if you honestly believe (I doubt it, though) that a snarky comment directed at someone will "chase them away..." then I can only presume you're projecting your own petulant and irrelevant reasons to vote or not onto those around you.

Wed Jun 20, 2018, 01:35 PM

... even if I don’t agree with you. The Trump campaign, the Republican Party and foreign interests spent a lot of time and resources poisoning our information networks in 2016. It’s really no surprise that a lot of people felt the way you did/do.

But you might consider that you’re now posting on a board with many democrats who follow politics very closely year round. A lot of us were mystified by the rise of Trump, as well as the national hatred - wholly undeserved - for HRC. It defied logic for us because we saw Trump clearly, and knew HRC was not the person portrayed in the media and on social networks. Those are given parameters now that we know what transpired - but we knew it here in real time.

But even so, still many here that were taken in by the scam, and many long time members are gone. It’s an understatement to say that there are some bruised, raw emotions still present. Please understand that many have a very low tolerance for others who didn’t see things clearly.

But here’s the thing - regardless of what you believed in 2016. Voting is in large part much like game theory. You have a vote to play. You might wish you had more in your arsenal - or wish for better alternatives or better ways to play it. But in the end, you should play it in the way that gives you the greatest chance of winning - getting the highest score you can. That may well mean voting against a candidate more than voting for one. But you should still do that. Otherwise you are truly throwing in the towel in the game and it is the very definition of wasted effort.

Many now regret their vote (whether for Trump or for someone else). That’s logical considering what has happened since the election. You don’t. That’s fine. But with that position comes the baggage of having helped allowed Trump to be. That’s another given. Even if your state went for HRC easily, the analysis is unchanged. The approach you took - taken by many others where it mattered - cost us. Every policy implemented, every right wing judge appointed, every Trumpism that occurs, can be traced back to an electorate that either voted unwisely, or failed to vote wisely.

I don’t mean to be preachy. But you are on DU. It’s a great site, for the most part. But many here call it like they see it - some more harshly than others. It’s not for people with thin skin.

Voted for him, feel horrible now that I know what he’s like? And I’m voting Democratic I the mid term?

There are a lot of low information voters out there. We’re better off talking to them than writing them off.

I get what you’re saying about people who still support him, but a lot of people who voted for him wouldn’t do it again.

For the record, I’ve never voted for a Repugnant Goon for anything.

to vote for someone who:

insults the parents of a dead Iraqi war veteran

brags about sexually assaulting women

brags about walking into a dressing room for teenaged girls because "I own the pageant"

makes racist remarks about Mexicans and blacks

has declared bankruptcy multiple times, stiffing workers and small business owners

mocks people with disabilities

runs a scam called "Trump University" that stiffs people out of millions of dollars

encouraged people at his rallies to physically assault people who didn't support him

refuses to release his tax returns

and on and on and on...?

All of this received widespread coverage. All of this was on display for a year or more before the election.

I'm glad that some of these people may finally be seeing the light. In the meantime, the damage done to our society is deep, and will endure for decades. Millions of people here and around the world will suffer in ways they wouldn't have under a Clinton presidency. Climate change will continue unchecked, even accelerating as environmental controls are gutted and poorer areas of the country and world used as toxic waste sites. Hundreds of thousands of people in Puerto Rico continue to suffer from the after effects of a botched and entirely inadequate federal response. Our allies are disheartened, our enemies delighted. And we're less than two years into this monstrosity of a government.

It's tough for me not to believe that many of the people who voted for Trump did so out of fear and loathing of people not like them: people of color, Latinos, LGBTs, people with disabilities. city dwellers, non-gun enthusiasts, etc. They wanted to see "liberal tears" and now see that that means the tears of children as well.

They might not wear Klan robes, but they empower people who do.

Not every German was a Nazi. Did that make what Germany and Germans did 1933 to 1945 any less reprehensible?

At least Germans had the excuse that there were consequences for not supporting the regime after 1933. You're saying we should excuse Trump voters who brought this mess down on us because some of them are just too "lazy" to care?

Do these voters have children? Do they not care about their children's future?

I think they are going to have to personally feel the pain of their bad decisions before they change. Too many have been brainwashed by hate radio/Fox news that democrats/liberals/the left want to take all their hard earned money & give it to the minorities, set up abortion clinics for the uppity women, & make bakers bake wedding cakes for gays. I've had two of my rw relatives read that Joe Conservative essay & I asked them, "What policies discussed here do you disagree with?" and they couldn't answer, but they know that they hate "libtards."

Step up to the plate & take some responsibility for your vote. Don't just swallow what your favorite news station tells you about your party/candidate. Do some real research & find out for yourself. One hour online would have revealed that Trump doesn't hire Americans, cheats his contractors out of their wages, sues anyone who says something uncomplimentary about him, refused to release his tax returns like every other modern candidate has, is a failed businessman, cannot prove that he is a billionaire, is a sexual predator. And that's just the surface. One hour & anyone could have found that out. If voters don't care enough to inform themselves, then we get the government we deserve & it appears that we are going to get what the lowest common denominator wants. Thanks for that, low-info voters.

Repent & vote Democratic in 2018. And tell your friends & family to, too.
