Visited Mom (87) in the nursing home today..She asks me "How did this guy get elected, Jody?"

So, my brother Jack and his wife left today for France and Italy. Joan is dancing/teaching in Italy. That means I take up the slack with Mom, 87, in the nursing home. She has all her marbles and we get our IQs from her branch. The younger kids all treat her like a toddler/invalid. I engage her and she stays with me. Since my life is politics, that is what I am gonna talk about. Took her the dress I am sewing for the July 4th parade. Read her my last 3 published letters. Apprised her of upcoming march for immigration here in our town. And Trump coming to WI for Foxconnnn groundbreaking. She does not watch TV.... funny how stuff filters to her, tho...not just from me.

Now she has lived thru many presidents, most of them good. She asks me "How did this guy get elected, Jody?" I said "Republican cheating, Russia and 1/2 of us didn't vote." She, "What is wrong with people?" I cannot answer that in a short paragraph. How do you tell a lady who lived thru a Depression WHY 50% of us stayed home.

I told her I posted on DU blog how nuts the media is yakking about Melania's jacket and a restaurant, when 37,000 nursing home residents are being kicked out this week in LA. Her eyes got big...now, her place is swank, $5Grand a month. Jack says she better die in 2 years as that is all the money she has left.

She told me she was proud of me and to keep up the good work...but it is hard ....I am 67 and have experienced much in those years...never thinking we would come to this...

Of course neither did she...her huz was in WW2 when he was 17...the Depression...7 kids, the glorious achievements of the 60s and our hippie days, Dad becoming a priest in his 40s.....she has seen MUCH more and cannot fathom 2018. How did JFK turn into this monster in the WH... I hug her goodbye..

Your mom sounds like a treasure!

And, boy, a lot of us can't figure out how this country has gone down the toilet so fast. She's not the only one. Tell your mom next time there are many of us out there fighting to get our country back, and giver her a big hug and tell her it's from Ohiogal on DU!

He got a divorce and an annulment back in the 70's. He had been in 3 seminaries and finally was ordained in the 80's.

Perhaps we’ve gone as far as is possible with our progress and humanitarian openness and generosity without examining our dark underbelly. We are in crisis, perhaps even a second civil war with ourself as a country. We are as polarized as is possible short of out and out killing each other en masse.

We are exactly on the ‘X’ that marks the spot at the juncture of the fork in the road. If we don’t gain control of Congress, or at least enough control to stop this tendency towards a dictatorship come November I fear the cruel underbelly will win this fight. Already the light that Lady Liberty holds up is diminished by the actions of criminality on our borders. Any future and probable action will be to expand the rounding up of all non-white, non-Christian people. Her light is in danger of going out.

Either path we choose will determine our future for a long time to come.

I know what side we’re on here in DU. Without it I don’t how I would continue.
