Anyone Else Here Being Ripped Off By SSL Required Ransom?

In order for google to rank your site "good" you need to purchase a $75 per year (or less) SSL certificate. For what?

Corporate Rape.

I have lots of websites.

I'm so screwed.

Anyone else?

It't not like they can't find the bad actors and prosecute them......

I'm just a businessman.

Namecheap is $29 for 3 Domain names.

Still money.

They could just prosecute some "bad actors" and we wouldn't need this "expense".

Your cert provides a basic level of authentication that you are in fact you.

The “bad actors” are all over the globe and have gotten very good at bad acting.

there is at least some evidence you are who you say you are and not some flimflam artist (or a Trump family member)

If you just have a blog and don't solicit payments then maybe it isn't necessary, but...

(note, I back out of any site that flags as not verified and likely others do too.... )

all your domains on your IP block banned and what that would do to both your reputation and business. Not enough? Consider what having your sites hacked so that they install malware on your clients computers would do.

75$ seems cheap in comparison

What kinds of websites are they? You say you're a businessman. What kind of business do you do? Are your websites profitable for you? If so, an SSL certificate will help make them more profitable, since trust is a key element of success. If they're not profitable enough for you to afford that small annual fee, then maybe they're not worth all that much to you.

I guess I'm not seeing your problem, really. I've worked on dozens of websites for SMB clients. Profitability and revenue generation are key elements those clients consider. They don't invest in websites that don't produce revenue for them. Why would they? An SSL certificate is a minor cost.

So, tell us more about your dilemma. You don't need to provide links. Just tell us what business type you run and how many websites you need to do your business. Frankly, I pay more per month than that cost just to have broadband access to the web.
