Note that it's considered gauche to refer to Ukraine as "the Ukraine."

Used to be standard. Then Ukrainians, a language without articles, decided that countries in English didn't have the definite article. We don't say "the France" or "the China" (okay, there's The Gambia, and we used to say "the Sudan", but the "the" has been experiencing greater desuetude each year).

Unless, of course, the country's labelled with common nouns. "I live in the United States" or "I live in the United Kingdom". But "I live in the Turkey" makes me sound like some sort of avian parasite.
