Faith Healer Parents Plead Guilty in the Death of Baby After They Chose Prayer Over Medical Help

The parents of an infant twin girl who died hours after her birth in 2017 pled guilty on Monday.

The couple, Sarah Mitchell, 25, and Travis Lee Mitchell, 22, pled guilty to negligent homicide and criminal mistreatment in the death of their daughter Gennifer Mitchell, according to the Associated Press.

The two are members of the Followers of Christ church, a small religious group that rejects medical care in favor of faith-healing.

Sarah gave birth to another child, Gennifer’s twin, Evelyn, who survived after a deputy medical examiner visiting the home because of the other baby’s death, noticed the still-living twin was also struggling to breathe, the AP reported.

I know folks of all stripes that make dubious medical decisions based upon something akin to "magical thinking". There is a pervasive belief out there that modern medicine is deeply flawed and more "natural based" methods are superior. Pyramids, crystals, blue light, meditation, supplements, diets, etc. all get deeply held beliefs that they are replacements for otherwise more traditional therapies and although there may be nice compliments to them, these alternate actions hardly qualify as replacements. Faith Healing is just another variation on the theme. And one can be amazed at who gets involved in these. Steve Jobs was probably one of them when he chose alternative therapies for his disease until it was really to late.

Unfortunately, it is closely related to the idea of "positive thinking". The idea that just somehow "believing" can make things happen. "You can be anything you want to be...". I get that one must not confuse the probable with the possible. And one should be careful about thinking they "know" what will happen. Positive thinking in its best form is continuing to try until there is nothing to try. Kinda like getting the boys outta the cave. It may have seemed stunningly dangerous, but what were the other choices. So you plan, practice and try. The flip side is you don't just dive in the water, start swimming, and "hope" that it will "all work out". Too much of this stuff is based upon the idea that wanting, hoping, and needing are the same as being able. Too much "it seems like it should be good" at work here.

And this has happened many times with the "Followers of Christ".

"An Oregonian investigation 20 years ago found that of the 78 children buried in the church's graveyard since 1955, at least 21 could have been saved with proper intervention."

This church’s members are no strangers to the court system as Sarah’s sister Shannon Hickman is also serving time for the death of her baby.

Shannon and her husband Dale are serving a six-year prison sentence after being convicted of second-degree manslaughter after the death of their infant son in 2009.

The boy died less than nine hours after Shannon gave birth.

Many other kids in this demented group have also died.

And the Mom wears glasses.

So only the kids can’t see a doctor? This woman didn’t even know she was having twins. What a couple of horrible people.

At least their surviving baby is in foster care.
