Listening to the GOP pundits on TV tonight was beyond entertaining - watching them try to spin Trump getting played into some monumental achievement was gut-busting hilarious!

(3,299 posts)Trump told him that the US would consider an announcement to end the Korean conflict. This falls in the category of CVIG which is the term Pompeo came up with, complete verifiable irreversible guarantee (of North Korean security). When Pompeo was meeting with Chol in Pyongyang, he blew off the proposal of such an announcement and went strictly with his allegedly new formula FFVD, which is only a superficial name change for what is essentially a unilateral ultimatum to denuclearize.
Pompeo seems to have retreated from his CVIG position, when he knows there won't be any denuclearization without dealing with the security guarantee issues. Who would give up their nukes without the security guarantees? Without CVIG you won't get CVID.
The political side of the problem is that any phased structure with reciprocity will arguably appear similar in design to other agreements that both Trump and neocons had earlier criticized.
The central issues are still the same. The core issue is still one bundle versus step by step, and the timing of reciprocal measures by the US. We're back to Song Kim's position as reported by the South Korean media on May 29, give up all warheads, fissile materials, and ICBMs, first for a piece of paper after its done.
