That is fairly easy to answer: Germany is everything Trump dislikes in a country.

- Germany is clumsy and slow. Everything is bogged down with regulations and complicated multilateral negotiations, from Germany's 6-party-parliament to its financial regulations to its unions.

- Germany has no glamour. Sure Germany has its share of skyscrapers and international celebrities and artists, but where are the decadent parties with yachts and models?

- Germany is famous for its engineers and scientists. Jobs where almost anyone can rise to a good career. That doesn't play well with Trump's classist mindset.

- Germany has a leadership-role in the EU and yet refuses that power because they don't want all the pressure and responsibility. Also, the EU is a complicated network of political and economic connections and Trump cannot handle this.

- Germany is friendly to immigrants.

- And worst of all: Germany is run by an old woman.





Compare that to Russia:

- Russia is run by an authoritarian strongman, for the simple reason that all of his competitors are either nutjobs from the political fringe, fame-hungry celebrities, or have successfully been branded as unreliable troublemakers.

- As such, Russia acts fast and decisive, because there is no need for internal deliberations.

- Russia has an imperial mindset. From the Czars, to the Soviet Union, to Putin, the Russians have always felt a connection to Russia as an empire. (The chaos of the post Cold War era has soured democracy's image in Russia.) And Trump shares that imperial mindset, where he's not one among equals, but one at the top.

- Russia is famous for its billionaires and vulgar dictator-chic and its parties and beautiful women.

- Russia is ethnically diverse, but basically all of these ethnicities are white people, so that's fine.

- And best of all: Russia is run by a man who likes to show off his virility.

That's where Trump's ancestors come from.

And the whole state basically looks like that. Humble, rural... forests, hills, villages, agriculture, wine... It's very nice there. The cities and towns separated from each other by endless forests for hiking.

But I guess it's not flashy enough for Trump. He stole a british coat-of-arms and the truth is that his ancestors are from a 1000-people village in the middle of nowhere.

My mom is 83. She has PTSD from being a kid in WW2 Germany, and from living in the former East Germany.

She will not speak of the trauma. A decade ago, the nightmares got to be too much. She asked me if I could help her figure out why she dreams of a bear attacking her every night. I said bear = Russia. The nightmares stopped.

It was incredibly mean for Trump to say what he did about Russia to Dr. Merkel.

I have a huge bias against Russia. Not the people. The government. And I always will have because I like it that way.
