Netflix and kill HBO's 18-year streak of getting the most Emmy nods

Meanwhile: Donald Glover! Netflix's dominance! People pretending to like 'Westworld'!

JESSICA M. GOLDSTEIN JUL 12, 2018, 1:37 PM

Despite an ongoing campaign by this fine website to convince the world — Emmy voters in particular — to introduce a glimmer of joy into increasingly apocalyptic days by accepting Jane the Virgin into your hearts, one of television’s most consistently excellent hours was snubbed this bright morning when the nominees for this year’s Emmy Awards were announced.

Instead, Emmy voters really committed to shows that even fans report are so bleak you kind of wonder why you’re still watching them (The Handmaid’s Tale); that generally make headlines for making its fans cry (This is Us); and that no one seems to actually like or understand, least of all the people who watch it (Westworld).

But let us see the glass half-full of vodka, for this website’s fine readers have also arrived extremely early to the “The Americans is the best show on TV” party. So early, in fact, that no one had even yet set out the snacks or filled the punch bowl. Chairs were still upside-down on tables. We waited here alone, season after season, for any other guests to show up.

Yes, I know he sounded good today but unlike Agent Beeman Peter was heartless, sending the real life Illegals to jail.
