House GOP Gleefully Plans Floor Vote To Split Democrats Over Abolishing ICE

By Kate Riga | July 13, 2018 8:39 am

House GOP leaders are salivating at the prospect of bringing a bill calling for the abolishment of ICE to a floor vote, forcing Democrats on the record over the divisive issue in an attempt to rend the party asunder before the midterms.

According to a Thursday Politico report, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) told reporters that the vote on Rep. Mark Pocan’s (D-WI) bill to eliminate the agency would happen before the August recess.

Republicans are also considering forcing a vote on “Medicare for All,” another issue where progressives and moderate Democrats are out of step.

Per Politico, Pocan and his co-sponsors—Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-WA) and Adriano Espaillat (D-NY)—say they will opt out of the majority party’s “political stunt” and plan to lead the Democrats in a no vote. However, they are still eager to debate the issue on the House floor.

The bill has caused contention within the Democratic party as well, as members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus are livid that they weren’t consulted about the bill in advance, that it hands the GOP a wedge issue when Democrats need a united front and that it distracts from the ongoing crisis of family separations at the border.

2. Public opinion is running about 3-1 in favor of the Democratic position on immigration

It's also polling heavily in favor on Medicare for All. I think Democrats can defend a vote on both of these issues far more easily than Republicans can explain to their constituents why they want them to die sooner and poorer.

Bring it on, says I.

Pound the ICE bill with reform amendments and debate them on the floor, force republicans to defeat everyone without a democrat voting with them.

On Medicare for all, have plenty of data showing how bad the current system is, and how many it hurts. Propose wise amendments to the republican bill, ones that favor patients and people that need healthcare, force republicans to vote against safeguards to insure people with pre existing conditions can get affordable coverage. Democrats should do grand presentations on the Capitol steps showing how republicans are ripping off the average American and all that need healthcare that is affordable, use Trump's campaign words and republican support for him as he runs away from those promises.

3. I think the Democrats can handle this. They will get to debate the misuse of ICE

Misusing ICE, as a personal politically motivated police force to go after asylum seekers and productive members of communities that pose no threat to our country's security, to demonize Hispanics does not make our country safer. It takes away manpower and resources that should be used to remove those that are truly doing us harm.

Every DEM should vote to abolish.

Remember, Republicans are going to say horrible things about us anyway, we might as well vote properly.

And if it does, they will bloody democrats in November with that vote. Pocan should have talked with the Hispanic caucus before he went off half cocked.

The way to handle this is to force debate on well thought out ICE reform amendments and then force republicans to vote down everyone of them to get to the abolish ICE vote, on that vote, democrats should vote no, then use the amendments that were proposed and defeated by republicans against republicans in November.
