Pierce: Mueller Has the Goods--All of the Goods

My Pierce trifecta for the day.

Mueller Has the Goods—All of the Goods
Wittingly or unwittingly, a huge cast of American characters was in on the plot.

BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
JUL 13, 2018

Goddamn them all.

Goddamn the hackers. Goddamn the journalists who laundered the pilfered material. Goddamn any of them who treated Roger Stone as a source, or as a cute prankster, instead of the nasty vandal he’s always been. Goddamn the pundits who chortled over the pilfered material. Goddamn the politicians who profited from the hacking. Goddamn the politicians who minimized the hacking. Goddamn the politicians who still stonewall about the hacking. Goddamn the “activists” who ranted about “McCarthyism” when anybody pointed out that the 2016 presidential election had been poisoned from afar. Goddamn them all as traitors, if not to the American nation, then to everything that ever made that nation worth the bother.

They conspired, wittingly or unwittingly. They colluded, wittingly or unwittingly. They are accessories, before and after the fact, to the hijacking of a democratic election. So, yes, goddamn them all.

Bob Mueller dropped the first of many shoes on Friday. Rod Rosenstein announced the indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers on charges of helping to ratfck the 2016 presidential election under the noms de ratfck "DCLeaks" and "Guccifer 2.0." Rosenstein went out of his way to say that no Americans were named in the indictment, so the White House grabbed onto that as though it were the last floating deck chair off the Lusitania. But it is very clear from the indictment that Mueller has the goods, all of the goods, and that nothing is going to slow him down or knock him off pace. (Notice how the indictment details how seriously the Russians took the president* appeal to them to find HRC’s “lost” emails.) The mills of the gods and all that....

Ignorance will be pleaded. The candidate, lobbyist, journalist, and person close to the Trump campaign will argue that they thought they were dealing with that 400-pound guy in New Jersey. It’s too late now to start believing those protestations. There was enough out there about the ratfcking in the middle of the summer of 2016 to make anyone who cared to look suspicious of being handed anything by hackers, and this includes WikiLeaks, which has had its halo knocked into the Bay of Fundy for good and all by this indictment. Too many people didn’t care, because Trump couldn’t ever win, and because it had been open season on Hillary Rodham Clinton for 25 years, and, boy, was that ever fun!

There's so much more coming. You can feel the hoofbeats of the horseman and the baying of the hounds behind every syllable of this indictment. My guess is that Mueller's not going to move on anyone in the United States until very late in the game. He's given all those folks a look at just a piece of what he's got. That's got to have their knees watery. And, because this is 2018, and everything is awful and strange, the president* this conspiracy helped to install is meeting, one on one, with the architect of it all, the Tsar of all the ratfckers, tomorrow. Everyone should be so very proud.

about the eventual punishment they face?

And how will the news of this indictment affect Manafort?

How will he react?

What is with the many members of Trump's "team" who have stopped working with his administration? How much did they know? How much of what they know have they told the Mueller investigation?

This is one of the most dangerous moments in our history in my opinion.

I can just imagine the breaking news that “the pResident is missing. No one’s seen him... last person to see him was So & So several hours ago... and Melania’s nowhere to be found now either. No trace of Barron...

And a little later some rumors start circulating of possible sightings in The Crimea or some such. It’d be some unremarkable airplane that no one associates with him. WON’T be Air Force One. They’ll be sneaking out of the country under cover of darkness to avoid detection and apprehension. He’ll lean on his good pal Putin to shelter them in exile.

I bet he's got something in mind already, because he has NO intention of being dragged off to jail. Whatever the case, all his leftover loyal "soldiers" will be left behind to fend for themselves. When these guys cut ties, they CUT 'em. They save only themselves. And if they abruptly have to pull up stakes and split because they've been tipped off that the marshalls are coming for them and they have to run straight to the helicopter out back, and Eric, or Donny Junior, hasn't gotten there in time, well, tough break. That'll likely mean a few high-level staffers like Sarah, Kellyanne, Rudy, Stephen Miller, John Kelly, and others will miss the boat, too. Gotta travel light, y'know.

Anybody remember when Mitt Romney lost to Barack Obama in 2012? The moment that race was called for Obama, Romney IMMEDIATELY cancelled all campaign staffers' credit cards. Which meant, wherever they happened to be at that moment, they were marooned. With no money to pay for a plane ticket home or get a hotel room for the night or anything. They were all cut OFF.

and can't conceive of not getting away with it. True, he's fighting back, blathering about witch hunts, sending out Ghouliani to make his case on the teevee, asserting he's above the law / doesn't have to testify, it's a witchhunt blah blah blah...but fundamentally he thinks it's a PR problem and he can bluster his way out of it. He's a bullshit artist and he always has.

It will make it all the sweeter when he learns differently, if we all manage to hold things together long enough for that to happen. I do agree he'll abandon anyone and everyone who is of no use to him.

I believe that’s what the “summit” with Putin is all about...exit strategy. That explains why there will be no one else present during the meeting.

It may cover the how and when the extraction will take place.
Exactly who is extracted.
The method of payment if not already rendered at the time.
A semi-logical explanation of a “what happened” story to release to the media.
More details to be worked out a later time to fit with the current “status of trump”.

There’s a lot to be considered.

It makes sense. Helps answer the question "why are they meeting in private - just the two of them and a translator or two?" An earlier time when they did this, there wasn't even an English translator. Just a Russian one.

If everything were on the up ''n' up, there'd be nothing to hide or lock away behind closed doors.

As Michael Avenatti put it, fairly early in his involvement in this extended mess, "those who have nothing to hide - hide nothing."

Fri Jul 13, 2018, 04:54 PM
Jul 2018

I've seen misstatements of the Rosenstein statement several times, now.

The above statement was not was Rosenstein said. What he said was that "the ALLEGATIONS in the indictments don't relate to American citizens." Something like that. Definitely referring to the ALLEGATIONS.

That is very different from saying he said no American is NAMED in the indictment.

I wish it weren't so, and maybe new indictments WILL name names like Roger Stone, Trump, Trump Jr, Kushner, and the rest of 'em. But Rosenstein "went out of his way" (as the OP article puts it) to state that the ALLEGATIONS are not about American citizens.

Maybe Rosenstein misspoke? I don't know. Time will tell. I am convinced that Trump Jr, Kushner, Trump, & others were working with the Russians on this espionage. But so far, there is no indictment that indicates that. There will be more indictments, though. I can only hope.

I'm struck by the arrogance and gall of all these criminals. Even now, when Manafort is in jail, he has that smug look on his face. Roger Stone walks around like he owns the world (from what I see in pics). The HUBRIS. I think it's a trait of both Republicans AND con men. The HUBRIS.

Numerous people were mentioned and their interactions with the those indicted was explained in minute detail. Mueller's team know exactly who did what and when. When they refer to "unindicted co-conspirators", they mean the people who conspired but have yet to be charged. And they will be.

Anyone with the remotest connection to this debacle has just been served notice. You can bet there will be a lot of huddling with lawyers in the next few days. There's a good chance some (especially younger ones) will offer themselves up in order to avoid long sentences.

Here's the video. At 16:00 he says that there is no allegation in this indictment that the Americans communicating w/the Russians knew they were Russians.

Then at 18:10..."there's no allegation in this indictment that any American citizen committed a crime."

(His press conference was not about the investigation in general, or future evidence. It was narrow and only about these 12 indictments and the allegations in them. He did not speak about what future evidence may reveal or anything else that may be coming down the pike.)
