Samuel and Ryan Reynolds are hilarious. Selma Hayek is in it and Gary Oldman is the bad guy....well everyone is basically a bad guy. Very violent and very strong language. Action that makes the Tom Cruise Mission Impossible movies look like a day in the park.

Reynolds character at one point says "You've ruined mutha----- for me. You've ruined that word".

that I can barely keep track but have heard about it and understand there is a sequel in the works!

Heck... if you see "Snakes on a Plane", that is filled with continual "strong language" and violence and hilarity (a formula that is necessary to soften it a bit).

Horrible movie. So bad it was good type thing. I expected the payoff line a lot but we only got it once near the end of the film.

My favorite Samuel L. Jackson story is about him playing golf somewhere deep in the south. He has a provision in his contract that requires membership in a golf club during filming. Can't remember which movie it was but he told the story of standing on a tee when a pickup truck pulls up. The gold old boy just sits there looking at him. Finally Jackson turns around and asks if there's something the guy needs. Good old boy says something like "Does Mr. ______ know you're out here" (implication clear) and Jackson responds "Yeah mutha_____ I'm a god damn member. In fact we had dinner together a few days ago". Good old boy pulls off.

was sortof a template for all the SyFy channel's "Sharknado" series... at least without the language. It basically goes into a high level of the absurd as part of being a "comedy-drama" that emulates a "B movie". However there is usually a decent enough plot to carry the story to a conclusion and have the audience care about the characters. I think the modern horror films of the '80s (notably the "Nightmare on Elm Street" films) successfully changed the genre by introducing a comedy relief aspect to counter some of the extreme imagery.

The first film that I remember seeing Jackson in was Spike Lee's "Jungle Fever" (in 1991). His performance was so dead-on that I was floored (but then later found out that he could draw on his own addiction experience to formulate the character).

As a Star Wars fan, he brought a great character into that universe too! "Mace Windu".

The release got moved back from July 25th

Yeah he actually rode the subway back from filming of Jungle Fever to his flat and smoked crack. Incredible story he has -

After the 1968 assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr., Jackson attended the funeral in Atlanta as one of the ushers.[17] Jackson then flew to Memphis to join an equal rights protest march. In a Parade interview Jackson revealed: "I was angry about the assassination, but I wasn't shocked by it. I knew that change was going to take something different – not sit-ins, not peaceful coexistence."[18]

In 1969, Jackson and several other students held members of the Morehouse College board of trustees (including a nearby Martin Luther King, Sr.) hostage on the campus, demanding reform in the school's curriculum and governance.[19] The college eventually agreed to change its policy, but Jackson was charged with and eventually convicted of unlawful confinement, a second-degree felony.[20] Jackson was then suspended for two years for his criminal record and his actions. He would later return to the college to earn his Bachelor of Arts in Drama in 1972.[21]

I saw the 1st one and then saw the 5th one last year. I know they are waiting with baited breath.

Thanks for the summary of some of his background! He has had quite a few ups and downs but then that has made him a powerful actor.

Airport was a book written by Arthur Hailey that was made into a move that did well at the box office, spawning three sequels. The formula was simple: take the biggest airplane you can get your hands on, pack it full of stars and put it in mortal danger.

A group of veteran screenwriters were having lunch and drinks and were making each other laugh by coming up with the best worst movie pitch ideas.

Naturally "Snakes on a Plane" had to be an action movie.

It caught fire online, and the community came up with the idea of Samuel L. Jackson and the catchphrase for the imagined bombastic trailer. SLJ actually liked it and thought it was funny and was on-board, and when you get star power involved, money moves in Hollywood.

Of course, Hollywood being up its own butt missed the point, gave it a generic title, and the script didn't actually originally *contain* the actual line. SLJ put his foot down because he didn't sign up for a movie called something like "Flight 390" without "motherfucking snakes..."

"Airport" lead off the eventual disaster films like "The Poseidon Adventure" and "Earthquake" and "The Towering Inferno" - the typical '70s "all star cast" films (most of which I saw in the movies back then and read the books too. ).... which eventually lead to many of those same people appearing, en masse, in the big mid-'70s - early '80s television miniseries like "Rich Man Poor Man" or "Roots" or "The Blue and The Gray", "The Thornbirds", etc.

"Disaster" films "sell". That's why Godzilla keeps getting rebooted.... but that is why the parodies proliferated too.

There was nothing good about that thing...starting with trying to sell the guy who’d been a mechanic in the first three films as a captain.

The whole gamut of them (and their sequels) pretty much played out in favor of big budget sci fi and super hero movies.

We saw the cycle repeat again several years before Y2K ("Twister", "Independence Day", "Mars Attacks!", "Deep Impact", "Dantes Peak" ) and again get replaced with sci fi/super hero... Wash. Rinse. Repeat...
