It's a little thing, but on the UP side...

When my mother retired at 63, she made a new batch of friends. Almost every day they meet for coffee and discuss the latest Facebook propaganda or FOX lies and become outraged at Obama and Hillary and Democrats and liberals. Mom's pretty smart and didn't used to be this way. She was a Democrat and almost always voted for the D - until she retired and took up with this redneck bunch of folks. She is 79 now and still lives in this very red area, but I was hoping she would not succumb to their nuttery. Unfortunately, she did. She voted for Trump.

She tries to avoid discussing politics w/ me. She doesn't watch a lot of news herself, but relies on her loser friends to inform her. I only try to undue what they are doing and sometimes this does get her to thinking. Anyway, I called her last night and this is how it went:

MOM: Hello there...
ME: Fasten your seatbelt, some treason-weasels are going down.
MOM: Treason-weasel - what's that?
ME: It's your president and GOP losers that you all love so much.

She thought for a few seconds...

MOM: What happened?
I told her about the Putin presser
MOM: That was so disturbing. (She had actually watched part of it.) There is nothing we can do about this now.
ME: Vote for every Democrat on your ballot - that's what you can do.
(More discussion...)
MOM: When the ballot is in the paper I'll bring it over so you can tell me about the candidates. I told the coffee gals I would and then I'll let them know so they can get a better idea of what's going on.

We discussed that topic for another minute or so, but it seems these Trump supporting senior women are pissed. Apparently siding with Russia is the one thing they will not accept.

I was encouraged by this. I am also hearing the same from some Trump supporters I visit with during the course of my work day. There appears to be a limit for some of them and he may have crossed a line when he sided w/ Putin. His hard core base will remain his hard core base I think, but this has me hopeful that many of the people who voted for him are not too far gone yet. Maybe it's a turning point. I don't know, but I have my fingers crossed.

plus the tariffs that are closing business and causing the loss of American jobs. Get those stats to your mother as well

She's opened the door a little, so I plan to get as much info in there as possible - just in small doses. I almost feel like she needs to be slowly deprogrammed and that saddens me.

Give them something real to find on their own.

It worked on my husband. Soon he was bringing me articles. Sometimes I would pretend I was seeing them for the first time.

I think you have a real good shot at doing something great for your mom.

Sounds like they’re ready.

You could get them woke, and your mom could brag about how smart you are.

Win/win

I was thinking I could have a cup of coffee w/ them and see where it went. One of them is pretty nasty though and these days I get pretty worked up. But yes, I will soon bite the bullet and suggest it to my mom - or maybe I'll just show up
