Not just in their refusal to examine the notes of the translator in the secret meeting of Trump and Putin but in numerous activities involving their complicity with this fake President.
For example, yesterday out of blue, they passed legislation to prevent the IRS from making public where "dark money" came from for charitable organizations. In effect, and most specifically, it was a "Protect the NRA" Bill. They cannot afford for the truth to be exposed about Russia, the NRA, and the Republican Party. It is a cover-up of massive proportions.

(21,624 posts)Which goes back to our unfortunate condition as a plutocracy: plutocrats own the GOPee; but the latter, in turn, is expected to produce results for them early and often.
And to do that, they have to win, win, win - no matter what.
Putin? No problem.
Vote rigging? Happy to do it.
Narcos? No problemo.

i wonder if red states/trump base will stay strong if they find out limbaugh/hannity's been getting russian money

(81,220 posts)They want that help again. Most, if not all, of them know they won in 2016 because they had lots of help from the Russians. And they want that help again.
Thats why its URGENT, VITAL, and ESSENTIAL that we do everything short of hiring people-movers to get our voters to the polls. MOST crucial at the state level because thats where Democratic majorities and governors can undo the District gerrymandering that the CONS have raised to a high art, to rig the game for themselves.
The ONLY way they win is if they CHEAT. Weve known that since the start of the new century. And the one weapon we still have in our arsenal is our majority numbers. If we get OUR people out, en masse, to vote, no amount of cheating can short-sheet that.
We HAVE TO win. This time in particular. We HAVE TO win. And no purity tests, either. No wiggle room. If the candidate has a D after his/her name, THATS who you vote for. D means you drive FORWARD. R means you go BACKWARD. Regardless. Its just that simple. Period. Full stop.
scarytomcat
(1,706 posts)but I think the rethugs have been cheating since before 2000. 2000 is when we found out punch card machines could be rigged then the dems let the the rethugs give us these machines that are even easier to cheat on. They can not win unless they throw people off the rolls, gerrymander and rig the machines. We need to get out the vote.

KIEV, Ukraine A month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, one of his closest allies in Congress House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy made a politically explosive assertion in a private conversation on Capitol Hill with his fellow GOP leaders: that Trump could be the beneficiary of payments from Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Theres two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump, McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016, exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia.
House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthys assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.

(4,999 posts)It is my unsupported by evidence hope, only speculation. Why does Paul Ryan exit political office *now* ? He is only 2 steps from the oval office, his dream come true? -- I have for years thought both Ryan and McConnell are up to their necks in laundered Russian money. If Mueller's team has solid evidence of that funding, then perhaps Ryan's best option was to flip, and make a quiet deal, rather than face humiliation and certain jail time.

(10,828 posts)The narrative is that they consider bucking the Trumpster as political suicide--the base, the base. The truth is they don't want the details to emerge because many of their members are complicit. They know it and soon the American public will know it. The Mueller team has taken their names and those of their incessant cheerleaders.

Certain tax-exempt groups will no longer be required to provide the names and addresses of donors to the IRS on annual forms under guidance that the Treasury Department and IRS released Monday evening.
The guidance reflects a priority of conservatives, who have been pushing for the IRS to bar collection of the donor information as part of their efforts to prevent the agency from targeting groups for their political beliefs.
Under federal law, charitable organizations that are tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) have to provide to the IRS information about the names and addresses of substantial donors. The IRS has required other types of tax-exempt organizations including 501(c)(4) social-welfare organizations that advocate for specific policies to also provide the agency with that information.
The names and addresses of donors is generally supposed to be kept private, but this information has improperly been made public in the past, notably in the case of the socially conservative National Organization for Marriage in 2012.

(493 posts)The worst thing for democracy is a boatload of dark money backing candidates and issues when the ELECTORATE has no idea who is fronting the money or what their MOTIVES are. This needs to be revisited by the Supreme Court...unlimited Money as speech, especially untraceable Money, is the mother of all evil in politics and it will kill our democracy.
Think about governance unimpeded by special interest dark money buying and influencing decision making. The Supreme Court has opened a Pandora's Box with the whole money is speech thing while ignoring money can be bribery thing.

(1,414 posts)We have, as a nation, succumbed to the effects of a coup. All the elements of our republic that supported our representative democracy are now tainted and in the process of being destroyed, if they haven't already been destroyed. Yet we, libs, progs, and republicans of conscience, keep hoping that those tainted and/or destroyed systems will relive us of this nightmare. IMHO, this is fool hardy. What difference will Mueller's actions make if those GOP'ers who have betrayed America (the list is long) remain in power and are able to block justice? What good does a blue wave do if our elections and voting systems are in the hands and at the mercy of a foreign power intent on destruction of our society? I know many of us on the left, middle, and some on the right continue to have faith in the foundations of what was once a decently functioning republic. I think, given the over abundance of evidence, that that hope is misplaced. I hope that I am wrong, but I think the full measure of what the majority of Americans are up against, that is the part of America totally against what some still refer to as the government, will come in full light. The realization is terrible, but it's one that has to be accepted if in fact anything is to be done about it.

(779 posts)Why are these meetings so secretive, why are they just Trump & Putin?
I am convinced that there can only be one reason - Putin has a large cache of material with which he can blackmail Trump, it is the russian way, collect dirt, the get the person you have dirt on into an elected position and you can own them, they will keep defending Trump until he is of no use to them.
Anyone else notice the smirk on Putin's face at the press conference after Trump meeting.
It is like he is saying he is in control.
