(3,344 posts)The basic story is not new. Only the details about the type of intelligence. It was discussed here last night, but most of us are just marvelling at why the press suddenly thinks this is new.

(47,366 posts)I don't recall hearing about Trump being shown the texts and emails. What made the story so explosive is that for a year and half, Trump has been saying he didn't think Russia had interfered in the election in favor of him. He was shown incontrovertible evidence and he still claimed Russia wasn't involved.

(3,515 posts)The hackers were being observed at the time of their hacking.
It was a sort of hacking war with the Russians hacking and the Americans trying to stop the hacking.
There are a lot of people out there who keep talking about servers.
The DNC and other American servers are not needed that much, not relevant because the proof is not past tense. The proof is not that the Russians hacked (past tense) but that they were being observed while hacking.
That is what rebuts the arguments of those who say we can't be sure it was the Russians.
We are absolutely certain it was the Russians. They were observed WHILE HACKING.
Sorry to be so rude, but there are a lot of unintelligent people in this world who don't understand the difference between the past tense and the present. I am sure you are not one of them because you already understood this. So I am not really answering you. I am answering those who don't "get the difference" between these recent reports and some of the vaguer older ones that made claims but did not substantiate the facts.
My guess is that Obama did not want to talk about these facts because they reveal espionage methods that the US wants and needs to keep secret.
Of course, now that Trump is in office, it is essential to prove to the world that the Russians really did hack our election information and the e-mails so that we can all defend ourselves and our democracies from these crimes.
Good luck when you talk to your Republican friends. You have the proof now. Share it.

(54,770 posts)While the Jan 2017 information given to trump by intelligence agencies might add to the overall explanation of his crazy and traitorous behavior and perhaps signal efforts to cover things up, it is still not as damning as what happened before the election and may have cost Clinton the election.
And as others have said, there is a lot happening on a daily basis. It is all making it more difficult for white wingers to protect or deny trump's actions.
