I remember this case so well because I met Trisha Meilli after she published her book, "I am the Central Park Jogger." What an astonishing, courageous and tenacious young woman. Her story is well worth the read.

Five innocent young Black men, coerced and beaten into confessions, spent an average of ten years in prison for a crime they did not commit. There was NO physical evidence linking any of them to this crime. However, because of the brutal, heinous nature of the beating, rape and sodomy of Ms. Meilli, NYPD and city prosecutors wanted to get the arrest and conviction on this nailed. Sadly, they had the wrong young men.

At the time, Donald Trump took out four full-page ads in the NY papers demanding that the death penalty be re-instated for these boys.

Years later, Mattias Reyes, a career criminal confessed to the crime to get a reduced sentence for yet another arrest, and his DNA - which was all over Trisha, her clothes and even found inside her wounds and her body - linked him to this despicable act beyond a shadow of a doubt. By anyone. Except . . .

Donald Trump refused to accept the overturned verdict, which by now was based on solid forensic and scientific evidence, and demanded that the men, now in their 30s, still be put to death, irrespective of the new arrest, trial and conviction of Reyes.
