US Conservatives Linked To Major Fake News Site With Suspected Russian Ties

Alex Kaplan

July 20, 2018 5:44 am

A major report from BuzzFeed News notes that Macedonian authorities, with the assistance of the FBI, are investigating multiple people in Macedonia involved with creating fake news sites, including an attorney who created one of the country’s first fake news sites, usapoliticstoday.com. The authorities are also looking into whether the attorney has any connections to the Russian government.

Here are some notable findings from the report and some context to them:

* Investigators are examining whether Anna Bogacheva, a Russian official who was recently indicted by special counsel Robert Mueller for involvement in Russian interference during the 2016 election, was involved in creating the Macedonian sites. Records indicate, according to BuzzFeed, that Bogacheva was in the country in 2015.

* The authorities are looking at at least 20 people, including attorney Trajche Arsov and Bogacheva, in “two overlapping investigations.” The FBI is assisting with the investigations and is sharing relevant information with Mueller.

So what if it's fake? It shouldn't matter. People should learn to be more skeptical of news, especially when it doesn't fit with reality. That, or unplug for a brief period. Stop getting bombarded by talking heads and see what happens.

Fake news sites aren't going to cease. It's time for people to get informed in ways that can be substantiated.

I have a friend who votes republican all the way, she is not stupid, or ignorant, she holds a masters degree and is very competent in her job, but her parents are republican, her grand-parents were republican, so she is republican. You cannot maintain a political conversation with her because she is completely ignorant when it comes to politics, but she buys everything fox news says, and nothing, absolutely nothing will change her choices. I was going to say "views", but she has no "views", hers and many other people who vote republican are completely ignorant on the politics, they are fanatics.

fake news every day, hook, line, and sinker.

They don't know how to tell the difference. When they went to school do you think it was a subject? NO. And it probably isn't even a subject today, at too many schools.

I'm no smarter than the average person, but I can smell b*******. 99.9% of the time it's pretty obvious first sentence or even the meme, even when those occasions it's information that we might want to believe. I just don't get how hard it is for people not to fall for b*******.

...because his supporters use Russian propaganda, far-right propaganda and conspiracy "news" sites and link to them on Facebook. He's telling them, "no that's not the fake news that's in the media, fake news is CNN and NYT".

I lurk on a lot of right-wing pages on FB, and the stuff they post is nuts and fake. These people don't know how to think critically or evaluate sources. They think that is a "liberal" thing.
