Trump got a rich friend to pay her off. My guess is the National Inquirer stepped in at Trump's behest, bought the story and buried it. I wonder if prosecutors use an incidental timeline for the events, did Trump and Cohen hash out how to pay before the Inquirer stepped in? How did the Inquirer know that there was a story to be bought?
