If you can draw 3k-4k to a primary rally for newcomers, you're doing something right for the party

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @Ocasio2018 16h16 hours ago
- 3,000 people gathered in Wichita, Kansas,
- on a Friday at 1pm,
- 3 months before the general election,
- to support a civil rights attorney running without corporate money on a boldly progressive agenda.

The Midwest feels pretty alright to me!

Wichitans line up hours before Sanders/Thompson campaign rally at Century II

Fans of the Vermont senator and former Democratic presidential candidate started lining up at 6:45 a.m. Friday for the scheduled 1 p.m. rally.

“There’s a great movement coming up. I can feel it,” Sheila Hardman said. “We’ve got to get the young people out, because they are our future. This gives us hope. A lot of times, people will overlook Kansas because they don’t think there’s a whole lot going on in Kansas. This is like the third or fourth time Bernie has been here, and I love him for it.”

Liberal icon, new Democratic star wade into GOP-heavy Kansas

KANSAS CITY, Kansas — The new face of an emerging democratic socialist movement joined its patriarch in the most unlikely place Friday, calling on Kansans unhappy with the direction of the country to get off the sidelines in a pivotal Republican-held congressional district.

“We know that people in Kansas, just like everywhere else in this country, just like families in the Bronx, just want a fair shake,” Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, the surprise winner in a New York House primary last month, told a frenetic crowd of more than 3,000 in a Kansas suburb of Kansas City.

Headlining a rally with Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez sought to infuse the final weeks of Democrat Brent Welder’s congressional primary campaign with the enthusiasm that lifted her over 20-year Democratic incumbent Rep. Joe Crowley last month.

In an election year defined by energized Democratic voters seeking to send President Donald Trump a message, Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez were betting they could stir up liberals in places where the left rarely competes.

Bernie Sanders Packs The House In Kansas City, Kansas, Rally For Brent Welder

In a room where it was hotter inside than outside, several thousand people stood shoulder-to-shoulder Friday evening to hear two progressive stars.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and New York congressional candidate Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came to Kansas City, Kansas, Friday to boost the congressional campaign of Brent Welder. He's one of six Democrats fighting it out to face incumbent Republican Rep. Kevin Yoder in November.

Bernie Sanders fires up 4,000 in Wichita with rally for James Thompson, against Trump

Sanders and Democratic rising star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came to Wichita to rally on behalf of James Thompson, running for Kansas’ 4th Congressional District seat.

The crowd nearly filled the 5,000-capacity hall at the Century II Convention and Performing Arts Center.

“Kansas was founded in a struggle over the conscience of this nation,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It was in 1861 the people of Kansas decided we were going to be a free nation. That is the crucible and the soul of this state. Don’t let anyone forget it.

“Kansas has delivered before and it will deliver again,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “You are carrying the candle of hope for this country.”

“You are too!” shouted a man the audience.

...saying they didn't expect to have the opportunity to vote for an unabashed progressive in Kansas.

This is a good way to expand the base of Democratic voters there, and energize them for the fall.

* By Trump count, this is equivalent to 76,000 people. Please adjust your extrapolation scalability.

And Bernie isn’t my thing, will never be my thing but I can’t help but wish her success. What I do like is her energy—she is tireless. She is using her considerable political capital pushing what she believes in. If she can avoid the large pitfalls in front of her, I think I will regain my enthusiasm. I’m watching trends as is my way. I think she’ll be very interesting to watch in Congress.
