https://www.macleans.ca/news/canada/is-it-time-for-canada-to-annex-blue-america/Never thought in a million years I would see such an article in a mainstream news magazine. But then we live in the disaster zone of Dump, so we have definitely gone down the rabbit hole.
The author actually makes some really good points and many are actually truer now than in October 2017 when it was written.
IMO, a scenario like this one could very well happen if the midterms are stolen.

(8,043 posts)If Trump supports Putin's idea for a "referendum" for western Ukraine, how about one for New England, New York, the west coast, Illinois, and whatever other states want to consider leaving?
PS -- Maybe we should never have left in the first place?

(5,293 posts)Right now it's 250 miles to the nearest Tim Horton's.
If I were rich-enough (or had the right marketable skills), I'd be living there now.

(6,227 posts)Tim Horton's is less than 5 minutes from my house here in Michigan. I also live minutes from the Canadian border - Windsor Ontario. I often look longingly across the Detroit River. My French Canadian roots on my father's side go back to the 1600s. Sadly I can't claim dual citizenship because my father was born in Detroit.

(10,721 posts)Living in CA as we do, my wife and I (and my in-laws) would be fine. But there are a lot of people who would want to relocate and don't have the means to do so.
Of course, Red America would quickly become destitute. And that's not hyperbole. Red America would be in immense trouble.

Theres a book written in 1975 Ecotopia by Ernest Callenbach how the west coast stays aligned to create a stable state eco system and Canada was involved. The western statues aligned because those states in the middle became unstable because they were stagnant. The story was kind of out there but remains in my mind.

(2,195 posts)Let's face it, the U.S. government is institutionally and structurally designed
to be a Plutocracy. Other places would not be perfect but at least the government
is not designed to be anti-democratic. As mentioned elsewhere, we would have to
beware of those hungry and greedy eyes cast by those of a failed and backward
system who would try to invade and force freedumb on us.

roamer65
(36,745 posts)You would have the new provinces of New England and New York pretty quickly. New Jersey would soon follow.
Canada would take NY and New England readily as it would give a land route to the Maritime provinces in the event of Quebec separation.

(15,078 posts)NO FOX NEWS in Canada! As I understand it, there is a law that requires any "news" organization to tell the truth. What a concept, eh?
Would this mean that I would have to learn a new pronunciation for the words house and mouse?
luvtheGWN
(1,336 posts)As for pronunciation -- hey, we have different regional pronunciations but the secret to words like house, mouse, out and about is that we don't draw out the "ou". Most Americans like to add sort of an extra syllable -- sort of an elongated "AOWWW".

(118,589 posts)As much as I love California and NY, and all in between, talk of sesssion and or annexation leads to twisted lives. Unless your culture is in decline and you are willing to put up with economic bad times to save it, don't start talking about leaving. Why look at what talk of separation did to the South for 150 years.

We would love to have Hawaii. I always wanted to go there. These days I go to Cuba.
How about Puerto Rico too?. We have two official languages. I think we can handle one more.
We have the Little Apple (toronto) like your Big Apple, NYC. Lots of diversity. Provincial One payer health care too.
We got a lot of land and a lot of water.
You know, this article was written in October 2017 but not much has changed. Most Canadians still love Obama and our prime minister Trudeau.
Maybe when it gets worse you can come as a refugee.

As much as I like the idea there is one detail that might put the kibosh on the whole deal.
There it is: Metric!
As an American, I can tell you that only a small handful of Americans would be willing to go metric. Not that we hate the metric system, we just can't understand it. It is very confusing. We have been trying to understand the metric system since the 1970s, but it just hasn't caught on.

So I'm good to go.
Frankly, in my more panicky moments these past 18 months, I have thought about where I should live - other than the United States of Trump - and then when I calm down I think "Damn it! I'm gonna stay and fight!"

(14,047 posts)Without the Blue States to keep things in check (and funded), Jim Crow would be unrestrained, sexism and racism would become "Protected" and the plutocracy without restraint.
Belligerent, religiously insane, and heavily armed with conventional and nuclear weapons. As the economy inevitably imploded from economic disparity and brain drain, Jesusland would look to scapegoats (minorities and the more prosperous Canadian States). Military solutions would almost certainly be considered because it is the only thing they think they know how to do well.
Quemado

Jesusland would spiral down to some kind of sewer. Laden with debt, no one in their right mind would lend money to it to finance its imperial military overstretch.
