Jake Sullivan - former adviser to VP Biden - called this a "stunt" and a distraction from all that's going on right now. And he said Trump "thinks" this saber rattling worked with North Korea - which it did not. Kim Jong-un had an agenda, thought he could "take advantage" of Trump - which he did.
