And it explains why they are so easily and continually duped by tRump. In short, his followers are too dumb to know they are dumb.
A new study published in the journal Political Psychology, carried out by the political scientist Ian Anson at the University of Maryland Baltimore County, not only found that the Dunning-Kruger effect applies to politics, it also appears to be exacerbated when partisan identities are made more salient. In other words, those who score low on political knowledge tend to overestimate their expertise even more when greater emphasis is placed on political affiliation.

In order to have a large representative sample of subjects, Dr. Anson administered online surveys to over 2,600 Americans. The first survey was designed to assess political knowledge, while the second was used to examine how confident they were in their knowledge.

This quirky cognitive bias could be making it easier for Donald Trump to continuously dupe his more uneducated followers. Not only are they uninformed, they are unlikely to ever try to become more informed on their own. In their minds, they have nothing new to learn.

But there is a bit of hope for them (and us).

(6,110 posts)They're usually in it for tax cuts. It does make me wonder about their morality.

(58,785 posts)moral or wise, it also doesn't even necessarily make them educated. One of the general characteristics seen among trumpsters is low levels of intellectual curiosity. They just aren't interested enough in knowing to question what they're told, easier to just accept. And in college, many avoid all classes they aren't required to take and just do what they have to to pass tests in courses they don't care about.
And that is definitely not confined to people from lower socioeconomic backgrounds. We see it in a lot of the social conservatives from wealthy backgrounds who enter politics. W was famous among his fellow students for an ignorance that was amazing in one of his background.
Mitt Romney traveled the world on business, but there are many stories showing that knew very little about the countries he visited beyond local workforces and other conditions affecting business.
Rand Paul thought students at a prestigious black college wouldn't know any more about black history than he had before someone handed him a couple of talking points. (Btw, I think we can put away Paul's pose of being a libertarian rather than just a too-ordinary conservative.)
Trump, of course, is mentally disordered and in a class by himself when it comes to lack of interest in anything he doesn't see as somehow about him.
