MI-GOV: Whitmer Releases Plan to Protect Reproductive Freedom in Michigan
DETROIT Today former Senate Democratic Leader and Ingham County Prosecutor Gretchen Whitmer released her plan to protect and expand womens reproductive rights by enshrining Roe v. Wade protections in state law. With the fate of Roe vs. Wade hanging in the balance with Donald Trumps Supreme Court appointment, Whitmers plan will repeal the 1931 law that criminalizes abortion and reinstate funding for family planning. Read the plan here.
The stakes in this election couldnt be higher for Michigan women and families, said Whitmer. As Governor, I will work fiercely to defend the rights of every Michigan woman, including womens access to all forms of reproductive care and contraception. I am going to fight like hell to pass state laws that will protect womens legal right to control their bodies and make their own decisions about whether and when to become a parent. The fate of Roe v. Wade and our constitutional rights are on the line in this election, and there is simply too much at stake for Michigan women to let Bill Schuette anywhere near the governors office.
We cant change the minds of people like Bill Schuette about whether women should have safe and legal access to all forms of reproductive care, but we sure can change where they sit, said Lori Carpentier, President and CEO of Planned Parenthood Advocates of Michigan. Michigan women need a governor who will stand up and protect our rights. Gretchen Whitmer has a real plan to protect Roe v. Wade in state law, and shes the only candidate in this race who actually knows how to get it done.
Whitmers plan includes:
1. Repealing PA 328 of 1938, which criminalizes abortion and labels family planning medical professionals as felons.
2. Restore family planning funding for low-income Michiganders that was cut by Governor Snyder and Lansing Republicans.
3. Repealing Michigans rape insurance law.
4. Requiring insurance companies to cover 365-day supplies of covered prescription contraceptives.
5. Removing the 24-hour waiting period for an abortion.
6. Ensuring health facilities cannot refuse to provide reproductive health services if withholding them would result in health risks.
7. Fixing our burdensome and ineffective sexual education laws.
Whitmer has also released plans to clean up Michigans drinking water, improve education and skills training, create more good-paying jobs, fix Michigans infrastructure and make state government more open, transparent and accountable.
