Cohen's Lawyer: 'Michael Has Turned, There's More To Come'
Brendan McDermid / Reuters

The leak of a taped conversation between Michael Cohen and Donald Trump discussing buying the rights to a Playboy model's story about an alleged affair has created shockwaves—and there's more to come. Lanny Davis, Cohen's lawyer, told Axios that we'll soon learn more about what his client "saw and heard" during his long stint as Trump's attorney and fixer. "Michael Cohen has made a turn. This is on the record—Michael and I talked about it," Davis reportedly said. "I’m not saying there are more tapes as telling as [this] one, ... but there are more tapes. ... There is more to come." The lawyer went on to say that leaking the tape to CNN was Cohen sending a message to Trump that: "I am no longer the previous Michael Cohen that you knew — taking a bullet for Donald Trump, saying anything to defend him, being a good soldier. ... That is over." In the leaked tape, Trump is heard saying "pay with cash" when discussing paying off former Playboy model Karen McDougal but it's unclear whether he suggests paying with cash or not paying, due to poor audio quality.

Cohen's attorney has identified himself as the person who provided the audio recording. That means it is not a leak. It is a release.
The attorney released the recording.

I like precision in language.

That's why his lawyers approved its release, I guess. I wonder why THAT tape was released. The only thing I heard that was possibly illegal was Cohen saying he has to set up a company...implying it was to make the payment. So it seems to confirm that Cohen set up a bogus company for that purpose. I guess it shows Trump knew what Cohen was doing. Not sure if that's illegal. Trump didn't tell Cohen to do that, on the tape. ???

They didn't say where the money was coming from. And Trump didn't tell Cohen how to do it, except not to pay cash.

It can't be campaign finance violation unless it's campaign money. But I didn't hear that on the tape. Cohen doesn't say where the money is going to come from.

2) It is a violation to arrange in-kind services without reporting them properly.

3) Trump says "cash", which would also violate the cash reporting requirements.

4) It does not have to be campaign money. The test is whether it benefits the campaign.

The allegation was that a wealthy benefactor paid off the girlfriend, not that campaign funds were used.

And what's on it explains why Trump's lawyers was okay with the release.

So maybe the other tapes do contain something damaging to Trump, or they want Trump to think that.

If they're still concerned with what Trump thinks and is afraid of, I thnk that would mean that Cohen hasn't flipped yet & is still trying to get something from Trump, whether it's a promise of a pardon or payment of his legal bills. ???

we have only (or at least I have only) heard a part of that conversation. Context is everything here, especially in the legal world. This snippet was released on purpose but we don't know the reasoning behind it.....yet.

he is still communicating. Anything he says or his lawyer says will be evidence. trump and Cohen are not the sharpest knives in the drawer. I don't know a lot about Cohen's lawyer, but making public statements is dumb. If Cohen is fishing for a pardon, his first concern is rattling trump and not protecting himself. Kind of Russian Roulette (bad pun, I know. But kind of on point).
