But temps have been near 120 the last few days, which is high even for us.

Yikes....what happens when cities/counties/states have brown outs.?
Friend of mine sez her power company in a large city send text alerts to people's smart phones about setting home A/C thermostats at a certain temp.
Apparently people who are wise in the matters of air conditioning have stated that home A/C units can only be efficient at lowering indoor temps 20 degrees from outdoor temps.
Her outdoor temp was 105 when I talked to her a couple days ago, she sets her A/C at 85.
I have no idea how she bears that,
