2. The WH is run by a bunch of amateurs and nitwits who don't bother to proofread

before they release statements, tweets or documents. It happens all the time.

And the "United Sates economy" is not going to double in size because economic growth will not continue at this pace. And we don't want it to. Can you spell "inflation"?

4. Proofreading is actually a learned skill

I'm retired now but I spent many years in the printing industry, and I started out as a typesetter and proofreader in the early 1970's. These days anyone who owns a computer thinks they know everything there is to know about "desktop publishing" however it used to be a career that required training and experience.

Being a good speller is part of it, yes - also knowing the rules of grammar, word usage and punctuation. But the proofreader's careful letter-by-letter comparison of typed copy against source material requires diligence and patience that can only be learned through practice. I don't believe proofreading is taught in trade schools anymore, and typography (typesetting) is longer considered a skilled trade. Pretty soon copy editors will also be a thing of the past.

I guess my grandson's generation will be doing everything with their thumbs. Oh well!

6. After awhile misspelled words kind of jump out at you

if you do a lot of editing and proofing. I used to work on a publication (before the days of word processing) where we proofread by reading galleys to each other and correcting errors using those old proofreaders' marks. I guess automatic spell-checking and auto-correct have made people lazy, but there's still no excuse for a final check before releasing any document to the public, because those features make their own mistakes.

Like I said - they're a bunch of lazy amateurs. I don't remember seeing those kinds of dumb, basic errors coming out of previous administrations or, for that matter, even from local governments. The Trump WH has managed to scrape the bottom of the barrel for every single function.

...however I didn't work in tandem with another person. I think it may have been that I worked for commercial printing companies rather than publishers. The rules are different in commercial printing; for example once the customer signs off on the proof, the printer isn't liable for errors.

But I agree with you that professionalism is completely gone now.

7. "typography (typesetting) is longer considered"--sorry, I couldn't resist.

I have also been a proofreader (for scientific and technical journals).

I also teach college English, so I spend a lot of my waking hours correcting other people's errors.

An error caused by lack of knowledge is one thing, but carelessness is something else. I want my students not to waste my time and energy on typos they could spot and fix themselves, so I paraphrase Marion Zimmer Bradley and warn them not to harness a dragon to cook their hamburgers.
