I bought a 4-pack yesterday and was asked for my date of birth.
I purchased them at Dollar General.
I was not asked to show ID.
This was a first for me.

(146,284 posts)I don't know. I get asked for a birthdate for a couple of OTC meds, and for spray paint, but not for lighters, yet.

(36,446 posts)I don't have to show ID, but some items get flagged at the self-checkout & the cashier has to clear the station before you can pay. Lighters & yes, Sharpie pens. I don't recall about matches. I don't think so.

(4,959 posts)I'm old enough they usually just ask for birthdate rather than to see my I.D.
I don't think it is a state law (I'm in Michigan) but I think some stores classify them as 'tobacco products' or something and use the age rules for that.

(13,091 posts)Maybe it is something new in Ohio.
The clerk has sold me lighters for several years.
She mentioned something about the register flagging the lighters.
I mentioned this was the first time anyone had asked my age.
She didn't say it was a new policy, but it seems to be.

(14,274 posts)And I haven't bought any since 2004. But back when I smoked I used to have to show my ID when I bought cigarettes or lighters.
