Why Michael Cohens Testimony Could Send Donald Trump Jr. to Jail
snip//
It was Donald Jr. who approved the time, location and participants in the meeting that included the Russian lawyer, Natalia Veselnitskaya, and a Russian-American lobbyist, Rinat Akhmetshin. He also brought to the Trump Tower conference table the then-chairman of Trumps campaign, Paul Manafort, and brother-in-law Jared Kushner among others.
If Cohens claim about Don Jr. is ultimately proven to be true, the Don Jr. gave false testimony given under oath, which is perjury.
Appearing on MSNBC, Former defense attorney Danny Cevallos explained that Don Jr. now is facing several different federal charges. Cevallos said:
If hes under oath, its perjury. If hes not under oath, it still might be section 1001. Weve already seen others indicted, pleading guilty to the exact same crime.
A number of high-profile people in the past have been charged with this crime. It is a very easy crime to make out and does not require an oath. It essentially requires just a knowing intentional misleading or lying to an agent or Congress or obstructing some proceeding.
Yesterday Senate Democrats said they want Don Jr. to come back to the Senate Judiciary Committee so they can ask him more questions about his previous testimony under oath. Several senators are now saying that the presidents son provided false testimony to the committee.
Both Bob Muellers team and the Senate Judiciary Committee think Donald Trump Jr. has some explaining to do. Right now it looks like they wont be letting up on the presidents son, but will keep applying pressure until they get truthful answers from him.
Many people believe that bringing Donald Trump Jr. to justice and threatening him with jail time is the best way to apply leverage on the president. It remains to be seen if that will happen, but if Michael Cohens account is later verified and proven to be true then there is no question that Junior could be facing some serious jail time.

(14,950 posts)By the time this is over, there won't be a single one of them who won't be eligible for charges based on false statements/false testimony/perjury/falsified documents. Whether all of them get charged is a different matter, I suppose.

(5,268 posts)Repub politicians are going to Moscow again soon, another Putin/Trump summit is being planned, the House Repub impeachment action against Rosenstein even after he just announced the hacking indictments of Russians, and Fox spin all indicates that Trump is trying to immunize the public to not think collusion/conspiracy with Russians is that serious of a crime or just a political witch hunt so when indictments hit close to Trump he can pardon Jr. or anyone else without much blowback and make other people like Cohen the scapegoats. I anticipate he will try to blame Cohen for trying to set up Trump Hotel in Moscow during campaign.
Trump Campaign paid Cohen's legal bills until Trump turned on him after finding out about the millions Cohen got paid for influence peddling plus finding out he had taped Trump. Trump now wants revenge against Cohen and thinks by leaking whatever dirt Cohen has prematurely will hurt Cohen's ability to plea bargain plus Trump thinks he can make Cohen, Manafort, Stone or others the scapegoats while pardoning Don Jr. or anyone close to Trump.
