AP FACT CHECK: Trump Says US Steel Opening Mills. Not So.

WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump is crediting his tariffs with persuading U.S. Steel to open a half dozen new plants. That's not so.

TRUMP at a Pennsylvania rally Thursday night: "U.S. Steel is opening up seven plants." On Tuesday, he told supporters in Florida: "U.S. Steel just announced that they're building six new steel mills."

THE FACTS: The Pittsburgh-based company has made no such announcement. U.S. Steel spokeswoman Meghan Cox declined to comment on Trump's claim but said any "operational changes" such as the opening of new mills would be "publicly announced" and "made available on our website" if it occurred.

That's how they'll spin this -

SHS: "The President was referring to American Steel companies - not specifically the company, US Steel"

in 2016, there was a meme going around about the Pope endorsing Trump. It was shared well over 1 million times. The debunkings from Snopes and other fact checkers were shared something like 25,000 times in total.

Meanwhile, even if a Papal endorsement were valuable, Trump had insulted the Pope earlier in 2016 over the Pope calling for civility in politics or something like that. So, any papal endorsement was highly unlikely.

11. The lie served its purpose; it got a cheer from the crowd

And that's all that matters. If the administration really needs to refer to this lie again, they will, but for now it can just be dumped down the memory hole. The fans felt good about themselves, Trump got an ovation, and nothing else matters.
