(401 posts)I think we need to run someone NOT from CA, MA, or NY.
Sen Harris would make an excellent VP pick but not the top spot on the ticket.
We really need to figure out how to span the urban-rural divide!
It seems like all of the Ds are clustered in the major cities and that is not a winning formula for us.

(90,645 posts)...and along the two coasts. At least that's how I read it.
I don't know what to do about the rural parts of the country. The vast middle of the continent does not have even 50% of the population. They are not diverse, as we think of diverse (think of Lake Woebegone, where diversity is the Catholics, the Lutherans, and the Methodists, and an ethnic mix of Swedes and Norwegians). They distrust diversity -- they think it's an elitist plot. They think America is supposed to be a white country. Just ask Laura Ingraham.
I apologize to any DUers who live in these areas. I hate saying these terrible generalizations out loud -- it makes me feel like a bigot, but we have a problem. Hillary tried hard to reach out to these areas, and to this day there are DUers repeating the falsehood that she did not even visit or talk about specific rural problems.
Nonetheless America managed to elect both Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, and it took a terrible act of treason to keep Hillary from the White House.
Our first problem is to deal with the acts of treason. To deal with voting machines that cast your ballot for you and then count it. To deal with gerrymandering.
It is much too early to talk about our pick for president. It is almost too late to talk about the other stuff.

(58,785 posts)for instance. Those who didn't betrayed not only themselves but they betrayed the legacy those who came before bequeathed to us and they betrayed their descendants.
Ecstatic, you put amateur bantam weights like Avenatti and Steyer on the poll and not HILLARY CLINTON?
I feel that we have huge unfinished business we should be achieving right now and that electing Hillary AGAIN would be an excellent way to end this tragic derailment of democracy and make America America again.

(56,828 posts)Politically, I probably like Warren the best, but I'm afraid she'd get hammered in a national election, as she still hasn't come up with a short, sharp response on the issue of her heritage. (Hillary never had a great response on the email issue, I thought) And, while I consider her charismatic as a Democrat, I'm not sure she would come across that way to moderates or disaffected Republicans.
I think Booker meets the smart, young and charismatic threshold like Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, but I think he has some issues in his past that could be troubling to those that insist on purity - his support for charter schools, for one. However, he can be a really passionate speaker and I think can fire up the base. Plus, he played D&D when he was younger.
I like Joe Biden as well, but he's older than Democratic winners over the last half century - JFK, Carter, Clinton and Obama. However, he would be great at zinging Donny during a debate. My concern would be that he does make gaffes and with trump's ability to drive the news cycle, it would get magnified way out of proportion to any single thing done by Trump.
I also like Harris and would love to see if we have any good governors that can run.

(40,168 posts)Agree, until Warren clears up the heritage thing, she'd have a tough go of it. Even in Mass., she's being hammered by some.
I like Biden, but we need a fresher face.

(32,685 posts)MSNBC showed clips of him basically going around the country speaking out against trump (at the border/ kids camps, etc). I like that he's fighting for us. I just wonder if people will give him a chance.

(14,093 posts)He's on track to be re-elected by nearly 20 points this year on Ohio in a swing state that Trump won.
Solid liberal. Likeable guy, witty, quick on his feet and a great communicator.
He's walked the walk on blue collar issues, opposing NAFTA and corporate trade deals and gets rustbelt issues. And, unlike Trump, he means what he says and doesn't have a line of products with his daughter made in overseas sweatshops.
He should have been Hillary's v-p pick in 2016, but instead we got Bill's recommendation of Kaine, who brought zilch to the ticket.
After November, Brown should be someone who gets talked about in these 2020 discussions.

(14,563 posts)I like Warren - smart, but tough, and has some folksiness to her.
But, Biden is going to have a lot of appeal because the entire government, and our political standing in the world, are going to be a raging dumpster fire, and I think he brings a lot of elements that people will want - he is known, he is tough, but likeable, classy, experienced, out of anyone else we might have on our side someone that other foreign leaders will be sure about ...
People are going to want sanity, and "no drama" after the 45 shitshow. He can do that.
If he wins the nomination, and gets a sharp VP on the ticket with him ... That probably will be the best way to go.

(6,377 posts)Smart, young, energetic, hell of a speaker, could possibly get the minority vote to come out in Obama-like numbers.
I also like Biden, the only thing that scares me is his age. Not that I personally think it's a problem, but I could see young voters sitting out because they don't feel like they can relate.

(30,481 posts)The revolt will start on day one when people are reminded how conservative some of his economic based votes have been. Many of his positions in that area stand in direct opposition to even the center of the party today.
Love Biden. I think he is a really good voice for us, and more. There is some serious selective memory going on when it comes to his past. I do understand that as he is awesome Uncle Joe.
Someone recently reminded me about this aspect and it did warm me up to him possibly running. Trump is decimating almost all corners of the federal government. For the most part, Biden is well respected and very knowledgeable by and about all corners of the federal government. Its going to take serious resources just to put competent people back in place.

Joe Kennedy III was born in 80, so he could certainly bring millennials to the polls in droves and has the Kennedy name; however, he looks like he's 12 and he'll barely be 40 on election day.
John Delaney of Maryland is a moderate in his 50s who is flying under the radar, but has done a helluva lot of ground game work. He has a kind of Joe Biden, common-sense guy vibe that I think voters could find appealing.
Mark Cuban has Trump-level media savvy and Trump-level money. The antidote to a celebrity President may, in fact, be another Celebrity President.
Kamala Harris could be the next President, the next AG in a Democratic administration, or the next nominee a Democratic President makes to the Supreme Court. Or she could remain Senator from California for a very long time.
Julian Castro and Eric Holder cannot be ruled out. I'd vote for Tammy Duckworth in a heartbeat, but I don't think she wants to run.
I like all of these people to varying degrees, but feel they are all too old to make a 2020 run: Joe Biden, Mike Bloomberg, Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren. I hope all of them will make valuable appearances for the nominee on the campaign trail.
I think Steyer has yet to sell Democrats that he has their best interests at heart. Right now, all we know is he is holding town halls on impeachment.
I would have said Gillibrand, but I think she's really divisive within the party: those who think she made a valuable stand for Me Too, and those who think she stuck a knife in Al Franken. Whichever view predominates, I could potentially see this becoming a divisive party issue, like Hillary's and John Kerry's IWR votes.

(7,595 posts)Out of your poll choices it would be Joe Biden hands down.
I'd really like to see any of the following run for 2020: Steve Bullock, Sherrod Brown, Julian Castro, Eric Garcetti, Eric Holder, Chris Murphy, and Joe Kennedy.
I would love to see a woman run too, although I would be worried since Trump is an infantile misogynist creep. I wouldn't want any woman to endure the treatment from Trump that Hillary dealt with. (bathroom break comments, lurking while checking out her backside, being called names, etc.) This terrible treatment is still etched in my memory.
If we're just going to throw celebrities in the White House from now I vote for a George Clooney/Leonardo DiCaprio ticket.
