I'm going to make a prediction that may be naive and might be proven wrong soon enough. But I honestly believe that if a tape of the President saying the n-word is made public, he will be forced to resign or at a minimum not run for reelection.

I'm 70 now, and we used the "n word"as often as we wanted back when I was a kid, and even a young adult. It was wrong, and we never used it around anyone of color, but we used the word "queer", "wetback", and a host of other very derogatory names. It just wasn't that unusual. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, but it didn't matter....fifty years ago it was common place. Hell, we had "Eany, meany, miney mo, catch a "n word" by the toe"...Huckleberry Finn was filled with it. Black Sambo was a cartoon and you could buy those stupid cement pieces of a little black person to put out front of your house.

What I'm saying is, we got smart. We became conscious of just how hurtful and ignorant using such words was. I don't use the words anymore. But if you catch this dim witted slug using language like that from some years ago, it means NOTHING! Even five or ten years ago. It was common place with racist folks and even people who thought it was just "funny" or clever.

I grew up in exurban Florida, where the suburbs touch the rural areas. I was in the seventh grade when Volusia County schools were finally completely desegregated pursuant to a court order in 1971. I rarely heard the Nword and I can say almost no one in my social circle used the word. You would look like a yahoo, even then. Our teachers , in 1971, in the exurban south were teaching the horrors of racism. When I look back they were conformists and disciplinarians but when it came to race they had a 21st century mindset. I thank God for them.

I did hear my fair share of homophobic remarks but when we learned one of our friends was gay at the end of the decade we supported him.

...of course, my generation was ten years older, and closer to the Jim Crow days. We were afraid to go into the parts of Portland that were predominantly colored. I remember when I was drafted into the Army in 1969, and I finally had people of color for my brothers.....it was a real awakening. I grew up then. I think that, for me, was the awakening and the realization that we have been shafting people of color forever.

Florida was a long way from Portland, Oregon. Oregon has a history of being a KKK mecca. I don't think that affected me personally, since we moved out from Minnesota when I was only five, but my neighbors and the society I grew up in had a mindset that kept the black man "in his place". I remember ONE student at my high school that was black. I didn't know him, but I didn't know many in high school. We were tracked into academic tracks...and he was in a different wave length than me....higher.

That's the way it was for me. Hopefully my grandkids won't have any of those ugly experiences I had. I hope one day the people of color will be recognized by their character, and not the color of their skin any longer.
