But I think you are confusing his father Francis with Frank. Francis was a very conservative and famous author in the Christian community.

wasn't as famous in Christian Right circles as his father, but Frank has taken responsibility for his part in it.

And how. He’s gone from steeped-in-the-blood Christian to vocal nonbeliever, from Christian conservative to liberal Democrat, from Hollywood director to novelist, from angry young man to slightly less angry older man — chronicled in two best-sellers, “Crazy for God” and “Sex, Mom & God.”

that is build around worship. Maybe many other paths such as unreasoned following of a credo that doesn't permit evidence-based analysis.

It's a real pity that Jesus's message was purposefully corrupted by the various factions/cults to suit their power/money-hungry appetites.
