The Obamas greeting visitors on White House tours

Yesterday I was killing time poking around on YouTube, and I found several videos of the Obamas (and sometimes just Michelle herself) surprising White House tours and greeting the visitors on the tours. In the videos, the Obamas shake hands and ask people where they’re from, and usually the dogs are there and visitors will pet them before moving on.

Watching those videos, I couldn’t imagine the Trumps doing that. In fact, you hardly ever see the Trumps actually talking to real people. There was ONE video of Trump coming out from behind a partition to wave at a bunch of kids, but he was out there for like 30 seconds and then he left. Trump and Melania seem to have no interest at all in real people, and to me they have zero social skills and I can’t even imagine Trump shaking hands and making small talk. He wouldn’t talk to anyone unless there was something in it for him or unless he was being applauded for doing it.

I felt great nostalgia for the Obamas. How in the world did we allow this to happen? And more so, how is it that so many people can’t see through Trump and see what a vile, repulsive person he is? If I live to be 1,000 years old, I will never “get” the appeal of the Trumps.

1. I remember watching some of those videos live

when Michelle would go down unannounced and greet visitors.
What an absolute thrill for the visitors.
She was so gracious, as you noted - shaking hands and asking folks where they were from. Made people feel at ease around her, as if they were old friends.

As for me, I would be afraid to touch a Trump. I would fear that while I was touching them one of the gang would be lifting my wallet.

I hope that in January of 2021 we have another gracious First Mate who has the charm and social skills of Michelle greeting folks into "the people's house."

2. I'd have to wash my hands!

I *might* shake Melania’s hand if she were there by herself, and I’d certainly shake poor Barron’s hand if he were there, but I wouldn’t want to catch major Donald Cooties, so I’d run the other way if I saw him waiting for me...
