Waffle House shooting suspect Travis Reinking not fit to stand trial

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WZTV) — UPDATE: A judge ruled accused Waffle House shooter Travis Reinking is not fit to stand trial and will be transferred to a mental health facility.

On Wednesday, a judge said Reinking suffered from a mental illness, which a physiologist identified as Schizophrenia.

Reinking, who is facing four counts of murder, will be transferred to Middle Tennessee Health Institute.

The transfer to a mental hospital does not mean Reinking won't have to stand trial, but it's likely cause a delay for months.

Psychologist Rena Isen testified that Reinking is mentally unstable and is a danger to himself or others. Isen believes Reinking's mental illness can be treated with medication.

Once it's determined that Reinking is legally competent, the hospital will immediately notify the court and Reinking will be transferred back to jail. Per state law, a check of Reinking's competency will be done every six months or more frequently.

Mentally ill people are more likely to be victims than perpetrators, but horrible events like this do happen once in a while. You just feel sorry for everyone involved. Then you think about how random occurrences affect our lives.
