Taxpayers paying to clean up after Pence family

http://www.chicagotribune.com/business/ct-pence-family-gas-stations-indiana-20180713-story.html

Vice President Mike Pence turns nostalgic when he talks about growing up in small-town Columbus, Indiana, where his father helped build a Midwestern empire of more than 200 gas stations that provided an upbringing on the "front row of the American dream."

But what he doesn't talk about is the more than 85 contaminated sites left behind.

Don't you hate it when businesses leave their mess for taxpayers to clean up?

2. republican "values" in action

Privatize the profits for yourself, screw over the workers, fuck up the environment, then make taxpayers cover the cost of cleaning up the freaking stinking mess you made while enriching yourself and smirking at the people you suckered.

6. In Florida we have a taxpayer fund that helps to take care of these.

It's poorly managed and has gotten much worse under Scott. It's hugely important that this not be done by the original owners of the tanks. That's not to say they shouldn't have a greater responsibility in the funding. I believe they do, in some states.

We currently have 19,000 or so petroleum storage tanks in the ground that are not in use and need to be removed.

7. The way I see it...

the original owners of such tanks should be responsible for 100% of the cost of cleaning up contaminated sites, plus 100% of the cost to make sure it's done right. The original owners should in no way get to manage the cleanup, but they should have to pay all costs. To me that's the only fair way. And, no buying off any officials to let them out of their responsibilities.

8. I think that is fair.

The costs would simply be offset by consumers over time. I do think that is the way it should be done. It could be done in many ways that would have the same impact.
