(58,511 posts)Marijuana dispensaries. I don't thibk she's going far.

(12,132 posts)I voted no it wasn't because:
a) I very, very rarely vote to hide any speech
and
b) I thought she actually did say this.
SO, if it was taken out of context, alerter should defend that position or else I am forced to continue believing Cynthia actually did say this.
On a related note, I am for more cannabis dispensaries but I still don't think CN is a great candidate.
I am excited to be able to vote for Gillum in the FL Governor's race.

(58,511 posts)New York gubernatorial candidate Cynthia Nixon is facing criticism after suggesting that giving black people access to marijuana licenses could serve as a form of reparations for black communities.

(58,785 posts)is an insult to him. Besides judgement and competence, Gillum is a Democrat of substance and experience who has always harnessed establishment power to achieve his goals. Gillum ran to win.
Nixon might be a fine citizen who identifies as a democratic socialist, but she's a joke candidate, with no record of achievement or experience. She has no expectation of winning, but the PR is keeping her name and face in the public eye.

(21,774 posts)I also watched the debate last night and there were times I thought I stumbled onto the
NYC Mayor's debate instead of the statewide Governor's one.
Unlike Nixon, Andrew Gillum is an experienced legislator and executive, being mayor of Tallahassee.
Mayors and governors are executive positions, coordinating the work of representational legislators (city council, state assembly, state senate, etc.) This is especially true for governors and their legislatures, whose decisions affect the whole of their state.
And as such, a governorship is not a place for political novices like Cynthia Nixon.
She is way out of her depth here. If she garners more then 35% of the vote September 13, it will be a miracle.

(2,015 posts)It makes me wonder why people think they should start out as governor or president. For the love of God, get some experience. Find out how governing actually works.

(7,616 posts)Gillum on the other hand is impressive. He is a Democrat with actual experience. He also has charisma, and from what I have seen so far seem to be able to bridge the gap between the sander's wing and Hillary's wing. He is unique in that regard. He was a delegate for Hillary, was on her short list for VP.
He is also pushing for some of the more progressive positions that Sanders was championing. As an aside, many of these progressive positions such as universal healthcare and $15.00 minimum wage are part of the democratic platform.
During the primaries he not only did well in his area around Tallahassee but he also ran up Broward county and other areas that were suppositely the strongholds of his opponents.
This tells me he is pulling voters that the other dems did not touch. This bodes well for November. This morning g he was being interviewed and made a point to mention the Puerto Rican community who settled into Florida after leaving their devastated island. He is likely to get their vote.

(32,640 posts)I could respect Nixon more if she ran for city council or statehouse, instead of running for Governor. That would show that she was serious about learning the ropes and doing the work. The vast majority of government is administrivia, meetings and budget spreadsheets. The minority of the job is "vision," speeches and parades.
I have to wonder if she feels that's not worth her time and energy, and doesn't want to be anywhere but NYC.

(650 posts)I believe that we do not need business
as usual, that time has passed, we are
at a cross roads. The Urban League recent
study shows that 50%of all Americans
Can't pay for their basic needs. We need
bold answers and political fighters for America. Imagine if president Lincoln
negotiated and compromised with the
Secessionist, America would be 30 or 40
separate countries today.
The Dems needs a bold and clear vision
Not a softer, gentler version of the Republican Party.
