Beyond the deep state witch hunt, Hunter defense could focus on campaign rule 'gray areas'

In the week since federal prosecutors dropped a sweeping indictment on Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife Margaret accusing them of using $250,000 in campaign money for personal expenses, Hunter and his lawyer publicly launched two lines of defense ó attacking prosecutors and blaming Margaret Hunter.

The accusation that the indictment was a politically motivated product of a deep state conspiracy inside the Justice Department, and Hunterís contention about his wife in an interview that ďwhatever she did, thatíll be looked at, too, Iím sure, but I didnít do itĒ have received the most attention.

But a larger legal defense was outlined in letters to Justice Department officials sent in the weeks before the indictment by Duncan Hunterís lawyer, Gregory Vega.

In the July 30 and Aug. 6 letters, Vega argued federal prosecutors had misinterpreted the law, were turning civil law violations into crimes and had rushed to indict his client.

1. His attorney is being well paid to say this sort of thing

Interesting, though, that he may be conceding that Hunter's corrupt ways might be civil law violations. Odd, though, because Hunter is definitely in the "What part of 'illegal' don't you understand?" camp of refugee and immigrant oppression. We'll see if his supporters suddenly become experts in the nuance and parsing of fine legal points.

2. It's also interesting that his lawyer is a Democrat

When Hunter loses in court will he then appeal the verdict because his attorney was secretly biased against him?
