On edit,
Here's the full eulogy:

(747 posts)Fuck her. She's spoken more kindly of Trump than she has of Bill Clinton. Yeah, fuck her.

(1,058 posts)I don't particularly care for Meghan's politics, but it's clear that she deeply loved her dad and despised what the infant idiot said and did to her father.

(4,066 posts)Every DUer is entitled to their opinion. You are entitled to disagree with it as you have done.
Just because Meghan McCain is the enemy of our enemy today does not make her our ally. She is anything but our ally. Monday, on The View, she will return to pushing Reich-wing memes.
I have sympathy for her as she is another human in pain. But not much else.
hlthe2b
(102,225 posts)whether to agree or disagree. Clearly the poster had no intention to do so.
Most progressives believe in doing so. Disagreement after doing so, is fine.
I note you offered sympathy in your disagreement. The other poster offered nothing but contempt and that to me is just sad. As much disdain as we all here might have had for Meghan, her father and most at that funeral, to grieve is human and to sympathize even more so.
bitterross
(4,066 posts)The post was not about the content of the speech. It was about Meghan McCain and basically that she didn't deserve the time spent watching her speak.
One need not watch one of her speeches that is presented in isolation about her dead parent to form an opinion about her. In fact, doing so would most likely present a skewed opinion of her. One that doesn't match reality.
hlthe2b
(102,225 posts)it displaying a lack of compassion. We are better than that.

(1,058 posts)even here on DU.

(14,249 posts)Is to prove we can be more hateful and less empathetic than they are.

(4,066 posts)We DUers, took on John McCain as a cause celebre when the people who were supposed to be his friends threw him out for their cult leader.
I do believe we have gone a bit too far in support of a Republican who, on the whole, was really not better than any other Republican in the party against which we fight. I can count on one hand the number of times he's helped progressive causes.
There is a difference between displaying compassion for another human in pain and deifying one's enemy because of a worse mutual enemy. I believe we have done our human best at the former and far too much of the latter.

(26,283 posts)tax cuts to the ultra wealthy as well as voting yes to Gorsuch so while its sad she lost her father and I have sympathy for that I would not trust her or most other Republicans as far as I could throw them as they have proven themselves untrustworthy.
Enough of this McCain worship already. It's ridiculous at this point. Beyond ridiculous.
I don't give one single shit about what Meghan McCain has to say about anything. Didn't before, don't now, won't in the future.
bitterross
(4,066 posts)I don't particularly like her either.
I took a huge raft of crap from a lot of people after 9-11 when I didn't fall in line and support W. The day after, as we all watched the non-stop coverage making him and Giuliani out to be heroes I vehemently disagreed.
I made the point he was still the same idiot, loser, privileged, rich-boy who never worked for anything as he was the day before it happened. Turns out my assessment was correct.
The same is true of her. Yes, I feel sympathy for her as a human. No, I don't respect her anymore today than I did yesterday or I will tomorrow.
ON EDIT: Just because she's saying things we like today doesn't mean she's our friend or advocate.

(63,221 posts)None of his children will ever share cherished memories of their childhood experiences with him because he basically ignored them until they were old enough to be of use to him. Nobody will cry genuine tears of grief at his passing. Nobody will truly miss him. He is incapable of loving or being loved and will never be remembered by anyone with fondness.
His entire life has been devoted to himself and the gratification of his desires. To the edification of his bloated ego and image. Nobody will miss Donald Trump when he departs this earth and it must be eating him alive to know that millions of people will be dancing in the streets when he finally croaks.

(5,106 posts)her father was pretty obvious as to how he felt about Trump. I would think she'd just have avoided the subject, not stood up for Trump (and she did, a number of times on The View).

(18,964 posts)I never imagined that Megan is or could be so eloquent. But she was! And that was one of the finest eulogies I've ever heard.
I was alternately cheering, crying and cursing at some of the attendees as the camera passed among them. I saw Henry Kissinger sitting there and wanted to shout at him for his role in Viet Nam, Cambodia..Thailand...I saw Jared and Ivanka and wished that the audience would rise and drive them out of the Cathedral.
No. John McCain wasn't perfect and I disagreed with him more than I agreed with him but his daughter gave him a marvelous eulogy.
Good for you Megan! This is your finest hour.

(28,120 posts)Besides, John Sidney McCain lll knew and his family knows we have a republic to save. And this is their middle finger to 45 for his mean-spirited statements about JSMc.
And these powerful rebukes might just move a few...a few on the fence to vote Democratic. To see R's rebuking BLOTUS may give them pause.

(34,049 posts)but when i turned on the tv this morning she was on.
i sat and watched the entire thing
perhaps it was the hour, but i found this to be one of the most moving, passionate, and heartfelt moments i have ever witnessed
obviously she has tremendously differing political views from my own but i understood her grief.

(11,631 posts)So I read the transcript of her comments here, but it wasn't until I watched the tape that I fully appreciated it. She was cracking up with emotion and then she just leveled her glare and delivered that "America of John McCain was always great"line like she wanted to ram it down Trump's throat. Bravo! Meghan takes the day and its a tribute to her dad the way she did it!

(37,648 posts)It's clear McCain had been a wonderful father. I found tears in my eyes a few times during this eulogy.
Obama's and Bush's were good, too. And Henry Kissinger, who gave a eulogy from a different perspective, given Kissinger's political role. All really good.
jb5150
(1,178 posts)but I listened to her entire eulogy, and thought it was powerful, moving, and heartfelt. It's difficult to live in the shadow of a famous and powerful parent. Perhaps though his passing, she can find a more balanced and empathetic voice for the hard working ordinary Americans she, and her father, claimed to represent ..... we can always hope.
radical noodle
(8,000 posts)with McCain politically to mourn the passing of someone who always tried to do what he thought was right for the country. There is far too little of that these days. His beliefs were different than ours, but he was basically a decent man who made mistakes as all of us do.
