John McCains Funeral Was a Council of WarJust as He Meant It to Be
A dispatch from the National Cathedral.
BY CHARLES P. PIERCE
SEP 1, 2018
WASHINGTON In the magnificent, lordly church-house, there were speeches and prayers. There were songs and hymns. There were bands and pipers and choirs and soloists. John McCain was given a national send-off in a National Cathedral and there was a great gathering of emotion that was almost frightening in its intensity because you knew that it was aimed at a solitary, angry, unbalanced man left back at the White House, at someone who nonetheless is the president* of the United States, with all the powers inherent to his office, a man who has created a situation in which he is an object of dislike and disrespect, because that is all that he's given to the world in return.
It was said almost immediately after the conclusion of the funeral ceremonies on Saturday that, for a few hours anyway, we were back in a familiar country with familiar customs and manners and norms, a country with institutions built to last. That may well be true. I felt it, too. But in back of that is the realization that all of us, including the deceased, had taken those customs, manners, norms, and institutions terribly for granted. We thought they could withstand anything, even a renegade president* in the pocket of a distant authoritarian goon. We let the customs, manners, norms and institutions weaken through neglect and now we are in open conflict with an elected president and, make no mistake about it, John McCain's funeral was a council of war, and it was a council of war because that's what John McCain meant it to be.
He deliberately made known to people that the president* was not welcome at any of the services. He deliberately chose the previous two presidents to deliver the formal eulogies. He deliberately created that scene in the Capitol rotunda at which Mitch McConnell, Paul Ryan, and Mike Pence, an unholy trio of Trumpist quislings, had to choke down their own cowardice and say how much they loved him and his irascibility. He deliberately created a mirror in which, if they still have an ounce of self-awareness, they could see the rot that has set in on their souls. Even at the end, John McCain knew what he was doing and he was a fearsome opponent. He wanted a pageant of everything this administration* has trashed and put up for sale, and that's what he got Saturdaya morality play shot through with Shakespearian portent and foreshadowing, a pageant of democracy's vengeance....
Make no mistake. Those are not patriotic banalities any more. The current president* has made them dead serious again. They are no longer frothy paeans to the greatness of America. They are compass points on a battlefield. They are no longer heard with half an ear and then forgotten. They are fighting words now. The president* knew it. That's why he spent the morning rage-tweeting and the afternoon playing golf. In dying, and in carefully planning his funeral in the way he did, John McCain has opened a second front.

You're right. It's up to the Democrats. I hope we get the chance before there are no more polar bears, there is no more Social Security or Medicare, there are no more national parks.

GET OUT THE VOTE - it is the MOST important thing that you can do to save the United States of America!

(115,587 posts)He was a Norwegian politician who sympathized with the Nazis, and with the Nazis' support was able to pull off a coup d'etat by which he made himself the Prime Minister so as to make it possible for the Nazis to invade and occupy Norway (which they wanted for its ports and natural resources).
In other words, he was installed by a foreign power as his country's head of state so that foreign power could control his country. Sound familiar?

(429 posts).....The entire service was amazing, and I loved the jab at #45 that Meghan McCain made when she said words to the effect that we don't need to make America great again as America has ALWAYS been great.......and of course, President Obama hit it out of the park, and even "W" was pretty doggone good......all in all, I think the way that John McCain outlined his service was a perfect fit for giving #45 the middle finger......it was good all the way around.........

(43,044 posts)More of America is waking up to this reality, and Trump's influence is waning, the investigations are rolling, and depth of the corruption is increasing in magnitude and public awareness. McCain's careful orchestration has moved us roughly 3 months ahead in awareness. It is a new reality today, one that has changed since a week ago. Love McCain, hate McCain's conservative intransigence, but know that American patriots of all stripes always - always - rally together and march together until the deed is done.
A hearty salute to Sen. John McCain!

I'd say by Valentines Day, if we get control of the Speakership (and the agenda and inquiry power that comes with it).

(114 posts)as I listened to all of John McCain's eulogies, that they were at least making Ryan, McConnell etal squirm in their seats...but alas I think they have no conscience or moral compass left---I don't think they heard the message at all!!

(1,587 posts)duty left in their cult like blindness, could not but be reminded that we are indeed better than that. While Lieberman was telling McCains joke about the two prisoners in the mess line, the camera panned over to Paul Ryan, and l saw a look of fleeting fear flash across his face. Dont think l imagined it.

(15,532 posts)I see it as a call to arms and a rallying cry to all of us who knew from the start that the election smelled to high heaven. We need to do all that we can to end this national nightmare! We need to overwhelmingly win in November all across this nation if we are to even be one-eight of the patriot that John McCain was. Patriotism comes in all stripes. It's not just military service. We can serve our country in so many ways.
Let's all of us on DU do whatever we can to make this happen. My heart has been sick since November of 2016. Never in my almost seven decades on this earth have I been so disheartened by what happened to our country and our democracy.

(2,590 posts)I have not been so moved in two years - - and that's too, too long.
The eloquence of the former Presidents - and I do include W in that (in an unusually poignant eulogy), as well as the ever eloquent Obama, who both elevated the proceedings. And Megan McCain's rebuke of the thug squatting at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue was as jarring as it was heartbreaking. I have not felt such emotion in almost two years. Two years. May this all end soon.
