As we were reminded over and over that JM's favorite book was For Whom the Bell Tolls whose protagonist dies for a cause he knows to be lost, utters as his last words:

“The world is a fine place and worth fighting for and I hate very much to leave it.”

And another line I remember (though I don't remember who says it):
"“For what are we born if not to aid one another?”

These are concepts that of which Pauly's heroine Ayn Rand could not comprehend. I am sure that he couldn't either.
