By Juan Williams, opinion contributor 09/03/18 06:00 AM EDT
President Trump likes to complain about Fake News.
So, heres some very real news for him:
Republican control of Capitol Hill and the White House is based on a fake majority.
A majority of the Senate now represents just 18 percent of the nations population, David Wasserman, an editor for The Cook Political Report, wrote in a recent New York Times column.

So, to recap: The lives of over 300 million Americans are being affected by policies foisted on them by a Senate majority that represents less than one-fifth of them and a president who was elected with three million fewer votes than his opponent.
Meanwhile, even as daily controversy, including federal convictions of his associates, surrounds Trump, the 18 percent represented by the GOP majority in the Senate protects the president from impeachment.
What is wrong with this picture?
Liberal comedian Bill Maher has long said that the Constitution is in need of a page one rewrite.
Thats funny, but the joke has a bite to it.
Trump has normalized many horrible things in our politics: racism, lying, scapegoating and corruption.
Future historians may look back and conclude one of the most corrosive things he normalized was minority-posing-as-majority tyranny that cheats the majority of the American people out of their democracy.

(6,228 posts)In November we are going to be voting on changing the way our districts lines are drawn. If it wins, the lines will be drawn by a commission made up of Democrats, repubs & independents. It will sure help after the next census.

Wonder what woke sleepy Juan Williams up. I suppose he had to phone something in.

(81,220 posts)Refusing to release his tax returns. That should have been a game-ender right there. Now its bound to come up again and again the next time some ambitious high-roller thinks hes entitled to be president. Mitt Romney finally caved but he sure balked, too. If he tries it again, I wouldnt be a bit surprised to see him try to pull the same stunt.

(58 posts)I cannot recommend enough, the book 'Democracy In Chains' by Nancy MacLean. This explains/exposes in great detail the plan for the minority to rule the majority. Their next step will be the installation of the right wing operative Kavanaugh. They see the courts as the one long-term solution to keep democracy in chains... and choke us along the way. (finally my first post, I've been reading and enjoying for years

Anyway, welcome to DU and congrats on your first post!

(58 posts)Thank you for the welcome. As I mentioned I have been reading and following DU for years. If you do read Democracy in Chains, you'll also want to read the very popular book 'Dark Money', it is all so tied together. There is a clear pattern and I try to get anyone who will listen to me to read both. I live in a small town in Hawaii and it's hard to get people to see the need for this information. Hawaii actually has one of the lowest voter participation percentages in the entire country. The reason given for such a low turn out is that we are always solidly Blue... but still disappointing because it affects our local communities as well. Once again thanks for the Aloha.

(63,221 posts)Thanks for the recommendation. For both books. Hopefully you can GOTV in your area even though it is solidly blue. We need every vote. And again, welcome. I hope you post more, including your opinions on the above mentioned books!

(12,422 posts)They don't worry about being unpopular because they love to think they are sticking it to the rest of us. Their ethos comes from the old South, which was the epitome of minority rule.
