President Donald Trump mocked a potential re-election challenge from former Secretary of State John Kerry on Monday, writing on Twitter that he "should only be so lucky" to face off against the 2004 Democratic presidential nominee in 2020.
"I see that John Kerry, the father of the now terminated Iran deal, is thinking of running for President," Trump wrote. "I should only be so lucky although the field that is currently assembling looks really good FOR ME!"
The president and his allies have previously antagonized other prospective members of the 2020 Democratic field, directing particular ire toward former Vice President Joe Biden, whom Trump attorney Rudy Giuliani dubbed "a mentally deficient idiot" in June.
Kerry, a former U.S. senator from Massachusetts failed to derail former President George W. Bush's second White House bid, falling 19 electoral votes short. On Sunday, he declined to rule out another run for the Oval Office in an interview with CBS.
"I'm really not thinking about it," Kerry said. "Talking about 2020 right now is a total distraction and waste of time. What we need to do is focus on 2018."
