The confirmation hearing for Judge Brett M. Kavanaugh for a seat on the Supreme Court quickly devolved into a political brawl on Tuesday, as Democrats sought to delay proceedings that one prominent Republican characterized as being governed by mob rule.
At the outset, Democrats repeatedly interrupted the opening statement of Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley (R-Iowa) as protesters in the room heckled the senators and sought to adjourn.
What are we trying to hide? Why are we rushing? Sen. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) asked.
Democrats have charged that documents on Kavanaughs career have been withheld without justification, particularly those from his tenure as a White House staffer for former president George W. Bush. Tensions flared Monday night when a lawyer for Bush turned over 42,000 pages of documents from Kavanaughs service to the committee on the eve of the hearing.

(15,278 posts)Have staffers work as long as needed and as quickly as possible to scan and post these docs on the web. Lots of people, including journalists, will start reading, digging and finding the relevent information. For the journalists/investigative reporters, this is a chance at a Pulitzer Prize.
