The criminal indictment issued against Rep. Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, late last month alleges years of cavalier spending luxury resorts, fine dining, tequila shots and more all paid for with political contributions.
The 47-page document also says the five-term Republican from Alpine had personal relationships with five unnamed individuals.
. . .
According to Vegas letter, prosecutors told the defense that they have pictures of indiscretions.

Three days later, Hunter had his campaign pay a $1,008 tab at the Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa and Casino for food, drinks and three nights lodging during a personal ski trip with Individual 14, the indictment states.
On the same day, the Hunter family bank account had a negative balance and incurred six separate overdraft fees, prosecutors allege.
And after all of that, he blamed his wife.

(62,269 posts)She figured everything out after someone noticed steam games were bought on the account. So she went through every single transaction. Hunter paid back $60k of them but another some $250k are still outstanding. They quite literally lived off of the campaign contributions and never batted an eye at it.

(62,269 posts)Ironically, had the initial Steam game purchases not have been made, no one would probably know about this. It seems that one error, activating the card on the account, then the son making repeated purchases, is what caused red flags to go up.
It took Morgan Cook calling up each and every vendor to ask about what they sold to see if it matched up with what they claimed it was. Once the feds got a wiff of it they started digging and it became an open and shut case.
If you have about 13 minutes you can watch Morgan Cook talk about how she figured it all out: http://www.sandiegouniontribune.com/visuals/100729586-132.html
Top notch investigative reporting, and it's why I hate how the media gets demonized. There are still very good reporters out there. Good people who take the job seriously.

(19,187 posts)for their kids "education". Children learn from watching their parents. The Hunters gave their kids one helluvan' education. What a pair of sleezeballs, and absolutely no remorse for their illegal actions. Talk about white Republican entitlement.

(62,269 posts)Duncan Hunter had to have known it was illegal as all hell to connect that credit card account to Steam and he initially blamed the kid: https://www.theverge.com/2016/4/6/11380576/duncan-hunter-son-steam-charges-campaign-money-vape
Two ways I see it going down: dad (or mom) buys his son a game (or himself a game) using the card, thinking nothing of it, since it's a one time thing, card is now connected to the account, kid uses it to buy more and more games over a period of months, totaling almost two thousand bucks.
More sinister: son writes down moms credit card number (takes a picture of it with his phone during the many illicit purchases they make), puts it in steam, and then goes willy nilly spending money since that's what mom and dad do with it.
Either way they're piece of crap humans with no morals or human decency. They would roast the ever living hell out of a poor minority stealing something of lesser value or committing a much more petty crime that didn't even reach felony status.

(34,341 posts)He's still almost 10 points ahead even after the indictments. They'd rather vote for a lying adulterer who is robbing his supporters blind than to vote for an honest Democrat. This country is in big trouble.

(19,187 posts)I prefer to think of it as, "Republicans are in big trouble". When people see what the Republican party has become they'll be close to extinction. I don't believe the Party of Trump will take it's place either. People are getting a front row view of how corrupt the Party of Trump is as well, not to mention it's racist, abject lunacy.
I think all of this spells extinction for the GOP. Between the Tea Party morons and the Party of Trump fascist idiots...... what's left of the GOP? Not to mention the fact that the GOP courted and wooed these two groups, fostered them, and "dog whistled" them into existence. No "dog whistling" anymore. The dogs are outside, eating your porch and shitting all over the neighbor's yards. They called them in, now they need to euthanize them because of the destruction they've caused. All because of greed and not being able to get along with others. A tragic end to a once important political party in our country. Now Democrats are going to have to guard against doing the same exact things. The temptation is immense. It always is when you mix massive amounts of money, and power. May we live up to our own expectations.

Remember the photos of the women with t-shirts that said, "You can grab my pussy" right after the news broke that he liked to grab women before the election? That is the type of person that voted for Hunter and will do it again.

(62,269 posts)The thing that scuffs me is that Republicans run local government pretty much everywhere and I know from first hand experience this graft is common. Very common. Experienced it in churches too as a kid growing up. Was friends with the pastors kids and they would regularly pull out the "tab" for "church events" to pay for what I felt, even as 10 years old, was not really church related expenses (taking us all to Pizza Hut after a football game).

It's all about racism and sexism. Absent racism alone, there simply is no viable Republican Party. There would not be sufficient support for right wing economic policy, right wing environmental policy, right wing health care policy, right wing foreign policy, etc.
We had better prioritize anti-racism and anti-sexism if we hope to bring an end to the Republican Party.

(62,269 posts)The wife is more likely than not very pissed off that she's the one who couldn't cover everything up well enough. They have her complaining that the treasurer was too clean and asked too much about expenses.
Prosecution is going to set them up against one another and while they do have marriage immunity (just a practice that partners are not required to testify against one another), their only chance is taking the stand and trying to explain away each purchase. Eliciting sympathy because they're "poor." I can see Duncan pulling off a convincing defense (blaming his wife, etc). I don't see the other side of that coin.
I predict the wife divorces from behind bars.
