Donald Trump inauguration crowd photos were edited after he intervened

Exclusive: documents released to Guardian reveal government photographer cropped space ‘where crowd ended’

~ A combination of photos shows the crowds attending the inauguration ceremonies of Donald Trump, left, and Barack Obama.

"A government photographer edited official pictures of Donald Trump’s inauguration to make the crowd appear bigger following a personal intervention from the president, according to newly released documents.

The photographer cropped out empty space “where the crowd ended” for a new set of pictures requested by Trump on the first morning of his presidency, after he was angered by images showing his audience was smaller than Barack Obama’s in 2009.

The detail was revealed in investigative reports released to the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act by the inspector general of the US interior department. They shed new light on the first self-inflicted crisis of Trump’s presidency, when his White House falsely claimed he had attracted the biggest ever inauguration audience.

The records detail a scramble within the National Park Service (NPS) on 21 January 2017 after an early-morning phone call between Trump and the acting NPS director, Michael Reynolds. They also state that Sean Spicer, then White House press secretary, called NPS officials repeatedly that day in pursuit of the more flattering photographs."

I’m sorry? As a female observer of all this bullshit, I find it impossible NOT to see this as one rather ridiculous, childish national dick contest.

For all these years, trump has triumphed in the private sector by perception management, creating this public perception that his is bigger. His ANYTHING is bigger. Doesn’t matter if it’s a failing casino, some bullshit ego-massaging tower construction somewhere, another one of those “great deals” he brags about that legitimately and realistically aren’t worth the paper they’re written on.

is that guy, when I used to stop for 1 after work, who nobody wanted to sit beside. He always had the coldest temperature at his house, caught the biggest fish, walked the farthest to school, never bought a round.
Everyone knew he was full of shit but everyone just agreed with him so he would just go away.

When that guy is the president of the United States, we have a problem.

"Edited" is a bit of an overstatement. They weren't photoshopped, just cropped.

When you say "edited", it sounds like some cloning/grafting/deceptive work was done, but we all saw the real photos first and that's what we remember. Those weren't "edited" to be misleading in any way.

"Those weren't "edited" to be misleading in any way." - Have you actually read the article? The intention was most definitely to be misleading, otherwise the cropping wouldn't have been called for.

This is borne out by the dogged insistence against all the facts that this was the biggest inauguration crowd in the history of the universe.

If Trump's crew thought they could have got away with cloning etc. as well, I'm sure they'd have gone for it, though the photographer might have had severe qualms from the sound of it.

It's just the way the headline reads:

"Donald Trump inauguration crowd photos were edited"

it sounds like something completely deceitful took place. Like someone went in and cloned crowds from one place to another.

All that happened here was some cropping. Cropping, I bet, happens on every single professional photo ever taken by anyone ever.

The intention was to deceive. The reason for the action was "something completely deceitful".

Cropping is a part of photography. You always shoot with some margin. That was not what went on in this case. The photograph was cropped with the intention to change the perception of the crowd size for that thing in the White House.

The scientologists used to edit photos to make themselves look good: cloning sections of crowd into empty places in their theatres and gatherings.

When I read the headline and saw people replying, that's what I was thought Trump had made the Park Service do.

But they just cropped the pictures more narrowly to show only the filled sections.

On top of that, did anyone ever see this cropped pictures? All I've seen are the side-by-sides like the one in this post, where it's not cropped and perfectly obvious how bad the crowds are.

It is beautiful to watch because that black man is everything he wanted to be. When idiot Spicer declared it was the biggest crowd PERIOD, I realized that he was reading an edict from the Con, the wanna be Emperor of the Holy Moran Empire.
It told us everything we needed to know. It didn't rain during his inauguration and he had the biggest crowd ever simply because he said so. He is a fucking delusional lunatic.

Remember now what you see isn't real. What he tells you is real - all else is fake.
