Two huge upsets by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Ayanna Pressley over older white men in high-profile Democratic primaries have put the spotlight squarely on Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), who faces his own primary test on Thursday against Kerri Evelyn Harris.
Carper, 71, who has held his seat since 2001, previously served two terms as Delawares governor and before that served 10 years in the House.
Hes the epitome of the political establishment in his state, and widely seen as an exemplar of the Delaware Way. He hasnt faced a serious primary challenge since he won his Senate seat.
Harris, 38, is a community activist and Air Force veteran who has received backing from Ocasio-Cortez. She would also become the first LGBTQ person of color to serve in the U.S. Senate should she win in November.
In challenging Carper, she has sought to cast him as an entrenched politician who has embraced Delawares corporate entities and failed to stand up for progressive values.
Though Harriss bid was initially seen as a long shot, the string of recent victories by progressive candidates have shined a spotlight on the race, with observers questioning whether Carper will be the next white, older male politician to fall to a political newcomer.

The horror! The horror that a different Democrat may win if they earn enough votes!!
How'd I do? Did I raise an appropriate level of concern??

(1,736 posts)It takes courage to step up and run for election, with all that's requires to qualify as a candidate and put your platform before the public. To do so as a member of an underrepresented community and take on an incumbent takes an even higher level of courage.
But opinions differ. Others can safely opine from their keyboards that "you got smoked" and build up their number of internet posts.
Democrats are a big tent party. No doubt.
