A Charlottesville, Va., jury fined Jeffrey Winder $1 for punching Unite the Right organizer Jason Kessler, well below the maximum penalty associated with misdemeanor assault: one year in jail and a $2,500 fine.
They clearly thought about it very sincerely, Winder's attorney, James Abrenio, who worked the case pro bono, told NPR regarding the jury.
He added that the prosecutor and judge were all kind.
Winder was originally found guilty in February and given a penalty that included a 30-day jail sentence, NPR reports. Winder appealed the decision and was again found guilty, but only charged the minimal fine.

(11,175 posts)Charlottesville is a solidly blue venue. It's not surprising that jurors drawn from that area are willing to, in effect, grant an exemption from the law to someone whose politics they share.
Is that a general principle we're comfortable with? There are plenty of places in this country where the outcome would be "At that price, there's no reason not to punch Black Lives Matter demonstrators" or the like.
I believe in equality before the law. Of course we won't always achieve it, but we should strive for it. Punching people in the face because you disagree with them is wrong, and it's wrong even if the victim is a Nazi.
