He starts to talk and I realize again what this country has done and how far we have fallen in so short a time.
Obama's presidency may be America's high point.
Right now is a new low.

(58,785 posts)a change moment, so depressing problems are not foremost in my mind. So wonderful to see our man step up to lead, to unify and excite. And not least to explain to those who haven't been listening to other leaders just what we stand for and what we need to do.
I'm sad that Hillary can't be out also. Must be very frustrating for her, but of course setting the right on fire is not what's needed right now. We need as many as possible wishing their leaders said what ours do and the rest -- they need to be depressed.

(58,785 posts)as well as starred at this fundraiser for these wonderful Democratic candidates. She's also now weighing in on Kavanaugh via Twitter, when she had to stay silent during Gorsuch's hearing. She's just done a whole series about Kavanaugh's egregious and profoundly dishonest rulings on the EPA and greenhouse gasses. He's for greenhouse gasses all the way, of course.
Hope this will build to Hillary joining Obama in the field. Itm, this speech at University of Illinois - wow!

(58,785 posts)anything BUT mindless ritual to those battling. We may still win. Don't believe the MSM who say Kavanaugh's doing okay. Our warriors are severely handicapped but have some heavy ammunition and are fighting to force Kavanaugh's withdrawal or defeat at the vote.
Which is where the electorate comes in. Midterms in only 2 months, probably only a little over one when the vote is taken. Itm, we'll be releasing compromising and eye-opening documents to the people all month.
And remember, only about 24% of our electorate are now Republican. Most conservatives who've left the party used the need to get another conservative on SCOTUS as a reason/excuse for voting Trump, and they achieved that. Polls show those same people already don't like Kavanaugh, and we're working on increasing that to justifiable alarm at the prospect of this authoritarian, anti-regulation extremist on the court.
It's a matter of showing them that, in the process stripping away the plausible deniability of Republican senators who pretend not to know. Like Murkowski and Collins, who both promise to protect women's rights while pretending not to know Kavanaugh will vote with a probable 4 others to criminalize abortion.

Wasn't that saying about living in interesting times supposed to have been a curse?

(20,219 posts)Its seemed like Senate hearings for every scum republican has been just formality and the pukes go ahead and confirm even after blatant stupidity (DeVos) or shameless lying (Pruitt) I fear the same dynamics will happen with Kavanaugh.
Now, I admit, I dont watch any media...just get caught up here. I know its a battle, every sane person is weighing in the fight...but...I fear the feckless pukes in power.
We need that blue wave come November!!

(58,785 posts)ones, but please, help yourself to that sugar glazed one.
Kavanaugh committed perjury back in 2004 and 2006 during his hearings for the appellate court, but we didn't have the emails then to prove it. That link Laurence Tribe gives is to an article by a staffer who wrote memos that were stolen and Kavanaugh twice denied receiving.

Sobering, though, Tribe also retweeted an editorial by Eugene Robinson that we are now already in constitutional crisis and only the voters can save us now. The Republicans will break our democracy to save themselves and serve their donors if they think they can get away with it.

(8,652 posts)Truman could never have beat Eisenhower in 1952. Eisenhower would have retired and not run in 1960. Kennedy. Johnson didn't run in 1968 by choice. Nixon resigned and Ford and Carter lost. Reagan could not have run in 1988 and Bush lost in 1992. Bill Clinton in 2000 is the closest call, but I'm guessing he's out in 2000. Bush 43 would have lost to Obama by more votes than McCain. So, the term limits, in my opinion, only gave us Trump instead of Obama.

(128,839 posts)take a look at this -
I got a Samsung Note 9 and a Samsung Gear VR headset (was able to get the phone to actually work in the headset while I'm waiting for the adapter to get delivered to correctly handle the bigger phone) and watched the 360 virtual reality version of it (which won an Emmy). OMG it's like he is literally sitting right next to you. It's a great tour of many of the rooms in the White House narrated by he and Michelle. You really get the scale when seeing it in 360 view.
mobeau69
(11,140 posts)BumRushDaShow
(128,839 posts)So if you want, you can spin the youtube video image around to see the 360 of the room as it is playing. I wasn't sure if that worked in 2D viewing but it does!

(128,839 posts)I was enthralled when I watched it a few days ago. They had apparently recorded it not long before they left the White House. I have never been inside the White House (and sure as hell ain't going in there now), so that was a great "tour" - and especially to get a truer feel for the actual room size while not being physically "there" - at least when viewing on the VR headset.
(it's sad to realize the place has now been defiled. )
Rhiannon12866
(205,168 posts)With the best tour guide ever! Just hearing his voice is reassuring! This definitely deserves its own OP - and I completely agree with you about the present occupant and his minions, makes me cringe every time I think of them in The People's House...
BumRushDaShow
(128,839 posts)but wasn't sure if people had already seen it and I was the last one who hadn't.
But since he is back on the road - I will probably go on and do it.
Edit to add - will wait a bit because people are posting his current speech in there so don't want to interfere with that!

BumRushDaShow
(128,839 posts)I edited my previous post to say I would wait a bit because people are posting videos of his latest speech so don't want those to fall off the front page!
Rhiannon12866
(205,168 posts)Since I post the late night comedians there, there's not much competition at that hour, LOL. But lots of folks look at the list of videos on the Latest/Home Page, so competition Is definitely a consideration and this is a video that everyone should see, especially with the best tour guide on the planet!

(41,959 posts)I think about this often with the narcissist in chief. One of the tells is that he is never actually looking at anyone or anything, in actual interaction. What he does instead is looks at how he is being looked at and constantly self-evaluating and self-responding. He is about effect, not affect. There is no real feeling there nor real empathy for the feeling of others. And we recognize that, even at an unconscious level. Its one of the characteristics in sociopathy that makes us uneasy. Its why President Obamas presence gives us a sense of relaxation and safety. Its why even GW, warmongering incompetent that he was, didnt hit us the way 45 does. He cannot see us. We dont exist as people, only as objects to manipulate.
And why do his followers not have the same response? Because their anger and their wish for him to fulfill their needs blinds them. They dont see him either. They see themselves in much the same way he does. They just dont have the power he does. So they grab onto his. Are they all sociopaths? Not by definition, but they do have a sense of separateness from society at large and a resentment of it. He makes them feel like they are the real society, not a suffering part of it that is just like other sufferers.

It makes absolutely no sense.
They say it's because he is the only one who has rallies. HE IS THE ONLY ONE TO EVER START HIS NEXT CAMPAIGN THE DAY AFTER HE WAS SWORN IN. This is not a good thing, hell they don't get it.

(182,767 posts)For one, the media is scared to death of appearing bias. Secondly, they had to create a horse race - local station's especially rely on ads during campaigns for a large portion of there revenues.
I wonder if a poll could be done and see how many people remember that the ARRA cut taxes for 97% of the public and that there was an 18 month Social Security holiday or what would have happened if he hadn't made the midnight call to save GM or remember Bin Laden.
Many other great things but reminding the public of that would have put away the election and the media needed it. I put most of the blame for this mess on the media.
Oh and how many people really know Obama's history. He was an actual middle class kid who grew up to be President beating several powerful political machines but no we got at least a year of "I WANT MY COUNTRY BACK" leading news casts morning noon and night.
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)and out of this "funk." He's come out to lead, and notably especially those 4 out of 5 younger voters who seemingly didn't believe their votes mattered in 2016. Not just the inheritors of our nation someday but citizens needed on the lines right now.
So nice to hear this wonderful, sensible and decent man speaking of what sensible and decent people need to be doing.
And if you do that, if you get involved and you get engaged and you knock on some doors and you talk with your friends and you argue with your family members and you change some minds and you vote, something powerful happens. Change happens. Hope happens. Not perfection, not every bit of cruelty and sadness and poverty and disease suddenly stricken from the Earth. There will still be problems, but with each new candidate that surprises you with a victory that you supported, a spark of hope happens. ...
You can be the generation that at a critical moment stood up and reminded us just how precious this experiment in democracy really is, just how powerful it can be when we fight for it, when we believe in it. I believe in you. I believe you will help lead us in the right direction, and I will be right there with you every step of the way. Thank you, Illinois. God bless you. God bless this country we love."
