Paul Ryan and Mitch McConnell tried to persuade Trump not to shut down the government by showing him glossy photos of his wall, to persuade him that he's actually winning.

They also tried to assuage him by showing him an article extolling his brilliance.

The only way to assuage the supposed "leader" of this country is to "manufacture reality" and assume he will believe it. So they do this rather than remove him. This is literally the epitome of aggrandization and the real national security issue that needs to be taken care of.
