And how he found success in politics by running on blind hatred.

All that changed when he was shot and left paralyzed.

After he reputiated his hatred, and asked forgiveness of the black community in Alabama, they forgave him and welcomed him with open arms.

..."Do on to others as the do on to you," but rather "do on to others as you would have them do on to you."

This is a huge distinction.

Personally I hold this law as a core to human ethics.

The greatest capacity in my view that a human being can have is the capacity for forgiveness. So many wars, so much tragedy, comes from the failure to do this admittedly difficult thing.

There are things that are difficult to forgive, and perhaps some that are impossible - or nearly impossible to forgive - but I strongly admire those who let things go. The best looking people in this story is not the one who has sought forgiveness, though we can appreciate her for doing so, but is in fact, those who forgave.

Those are great human beings knocking down the walls they built.

I say this as a person who has failed to forgive some things, but I'm generally not happy with myself as a result.

This story makes me happy and hopeful.

For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.
